Hi there! It's been quite a while since I've posted, but I promise I have a really good excuse: his name is Charlie.

My mama is already using me as an excuse.

Charlie was born on February 9, two days before his due date, and he is a complete joy. My contractions started to be regular on Monday morning, they got really painful Monday evening around 9pm, we headed to the hospital about 3:30am on Tuesday, and Charlie was born at 10:40am on Tuesday. (and let me tell you I was SHOCKED when they told me what time it was, because it felt like I had been in labor for like 24 hours.)

I had a freaking amazing group of people with me who helped me through every contraction and pushing - ack - and helped me bring Charlie into the world healthy and alert. Jacob, Cathy, our two doulas, and an amazing midwife and nurse were totally there for me the whole time, and boy did I need them. :) It was such an intense and amazing experience.

And now we're home! We're still in a bit of a newborn haze, and I'm slowly trying to emerge to get into a normal routine, but I'm also trying not to rush - it's only been about two weeks. I have lots of beautiful handknits to show you - people have been so amazingly generous to us and Charlie and he's got the best wardrobe of knits I've ever seen, and some beautiful quilts as well. He's a lucky baby.

We are extremely tired but so, so happy, and very much in love with our little guy. I still can't believe he's here and that we have a SON. We are parents!

I'll hopefully be back online on a regular basis soon, but I wanted to post and let you know that Charlie is here, he's a healthy and adorable schmoo, and that we're all doing great. Even Bella has been adjusting really well - she's a good dogger. :) so things are good!!

Yayayayay, Charlie is here!

It's 2010! I can't even believe it. 2009 was a great year for me in so many ways - and we are so looking forward to 2010, for obvious reasons:

o hai, I am super pregnant. 33 weeks, 5 days.

As I'm posting this, I'm 34 weeks and 1 day - which means that my due date is less than 6 weeks away. !!! It feels like this time has flown by, although as we get closer, it moves a little slower. ha. I'm also moving a little more slowly - my energy level is down a bit and it's just a little harder for me to get around and get comfortable. But overall, I'm doing great! I still feel good, and the littlest schmoo is jumping around like a crazy boy. We can't wait to meet him!

The start of the new year always makes me (and other knitters) want to look back at our knits for the past year. So here are mine:

2009 finished knits. and one crochet project. ;)

Lots of hats in there, baby and adult sized, and a couple of sweaters and shawls, and of course tons of baby knits! I have a few more projects in mind for the littlest schmoo - I hopefully still have some time to knit, and I certainly plan to take advantage of it. I have yarn for this adorable vest
and also this little sweater from Phildar Tricotez Calin Fall-Winter 2009. (so many cute things in that magazine - I had to order the French version from Phildar, but my French is good enough to translate. I think.) I'll probably make a few more hats, too, just because they are fun and fast and useful and also adorable.

I realize that I might not finish everything I want to knit before the baby arrives, and that's okay. I also realize that my knitting time might be limited after he is born, and that's okay too! I like to line things up just in case. hahahahaha.

So, things here are good. We've got all the necessary items to bring the littlest schmoo home, so now we're focusing on the part where he's born! We've taken a tour of our hospital, and we're working with a great doula and an awesome midwifery practice, and I'm getting more and more excited about things every day. I'm also practicing lots of meditation and positive thinking - I'm a super anxious person by nature, and so it's helped me a lot in this pregnancy to breathe, and focus on the good, positive things that can happen (instead of dwelling on what-ifs, which is my normal way of doing things.) It's really helped to calm down my anxieties (or most of them, anyways.)

On a super sad note - those of you who follow me on Flickr or Twitter or Facebook already know that my father passed away unexpectedly on December 15th. My dad had a stroke 8 years ago and wasn't in perfect health, but he'd been doing really, really well, so it was a pretty big shock to our whole family. There isn't ever a good time for someone to pass away - it always feels so completely unfair - but it was especially hard for us since the baby is due so soon, and my dad was so looking forward to meeting him. But I'm so grateful that he got to see me super pregnant and share this pregnancy with me and Jacob for the time that he did.

We set up a memorial page for my dad at the American Stroke Association website. Our family has been spending lots of time together and dealing with things as best we can; but really, it just sucks, and we miss him lots. Thank you so much for all the kind emails and cards and messages - the support has helped so much, and just shows me, once again, what an incredible online community we have. Y'all are awesome. :)

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and a great New Year's. We have so much to look forward to in this coming year, and I hope the new year brings hope and happiness and joy to all of you, too!

yep, I'm definitely pregnant. hee.

I've been sewing and knitting a lot. The sewing has been in preparation for a craft fair that I'll hopefully be at in early December, and the knitting has been mostly baby oriented (surprise!) -- some for our baby, some for baby swaps, some for the awesome tiny teamie Hayes.

Baby stuff is so fun and fast to knit! I'm sure I'll be making a few more sweaters for the littlest schmoo before I'm done.

You can see some of the stuff that me and my friend JoAnna have been sewing here in this Flickr set. If all goes as planned, we'll have a little booth at the 2009 Athens Indie Craftstravaganzaa Holiday Market in December under the name "teamie & schmoo", and we're really excited! We've been making lots of cute baby stuff and some box bags and bags as well. I've also had a few people commission me to make some diaper bags / messenger bags for them, and it's been super fun to work on those. Like I said before, I'm trying to take advantage of my energy while I've got it. :)

I also received some amazing handknits from my awesome friend Sarah. I got this package in the mail last week on a particularly crappy morning, and man, did it cheer me up!

amazing knits! and so wee! and adorable!

I don't think it's possible to be grouchy when you are holding teeny tiny handknit baby socks. The littlest schmoo is going to be so well-dressed! thanks again, Sarah, for this beautiful teeny tiny wardrobe. OMG baby knits are CUTE. and Sarah is made of awesome.

In addition to the crafting, we've been working on getting our house ready for our newest family member. There's been painting and carpet ripping and furniture assembling (mostly by Jacob) and we've still got more to do, but we've definitely made some progress. I feel so lucky - we've had so many people give us baby things that they are no longer using, and our kitchen is totally full of baby awesomeness right now - toys, clothes, chairs, etc - and maternity stuff too! We have really generous people in our lives, and we are lucky, lucky schmoos. Hopefully we can return the favor someday!

Anyways, that's the story around here. Lots of things going on, but I'm trying to relax and rest some too - although I *do* like being busy. :) It's been really nice to get things done at home and spend time with Jacob and Bella.

It's almost the holidays! I hope this post finds you staying warm and feeling great and not too stressed about holiday crafting. :)

I've been sewing. a lot. I've been knitting too - I'm *this* close to finishing my Smock - but I've just been feeling the urge to sew lately! (It's a nice change from my first trimester, when I didn't feel like doing anything, especially sewing.)

First up: a yoga mat bag! I'm going to prenatal yoga twice a week, and I almost bought a little bag for my mat at REI, and then I realized that I could make one with some stash fabric.

Amy Butler fabric + yoga mat bag = hooray.
</center

I used this tutorial from Bored & Crafty, and borrowed the measurements from Jess's blog post. I just used some ribbon for the drawstring, although I might end up trimming it or using something else later. I lined it with some heavy linen that I had laying around, and it fits perfectly. This was a super quick and easy project!

Next: placemats! We've been eating dinner with friends at our house a lot lately, and we have a nice new-old dining room table from Jacob's parents, but no placemats. I have no idea why - they're probably packed up in our crawlspace upstairs somewhere. BUT! why not just make some?

New placemats make the table look better.

For these I used an Orla Kiely tablecloth half that I'd been saving for the perfect project, some solids from my scrap bin, and some super heavy interfacing. I'm really happy with the way they turned out - even Jacob approved. I used this tutorial to make them. She actually does binding around the edges, and I'd planned on doing a binding with the Orla Kiely fabric but I didn't have enough left over. So, I just decided to sew the right sides together, leave a hole, turn them inside out, and then top stitch. easy peasy!

and finally: my first baby-related project! a diaper bag!

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2518/3905017977_b9a499a642.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="365.2.246 I made a diaper bag."border="0" />
I'm so proud - can you tell?

I love love this bag. It's completely lined in vinyl, has pockets galore, including a back zipper pocket, and is super sturdy.

I used this fantastic tutorial over at A Mingled Yarn, and seriously, I can't say enough about how great it is. I'm not a new sewist, but I'm not advanced AT ALL - I've learned everything from books and the Internets, and friends who are nice enough to help me. The tutorial for this bag is so clear, with great instructions and pictures, and gave me confidence that I could actually make the bag, even when I was scared of all the fabric and vinyl that I was cutting out. hee.

like this moment, when I was like, WHAT AM I DOING.

It's a great tutorial! and it would make a great bag for anything, not just diapers. I mean, who wouldn't want all these pockets in their bag?

pockets!

I was so happy and excited when I finished - I kept parading around the house with my bag, and Jacob was nice enough to keep exclaiming over it. Har.

So yay for sewing! I think I've probably got some more patterns to try out soon...do you have any favorite sewing tutorials?

hi there! It's been about a month since I last posted, and it has flown by. I'm feeling a lot better energy wise, although I'm still not sleeping very well. I guess it's good practice for actually having a baby in the house, right? or that's what I keep telling myself...

Otherwise, I feel great! I've been doing prenatal yoga twice a week, and it's been such a good experience. I've never taken any yoga classes before, and this has been an awesome introduction. I'm actually thinking about picking up another class because I just love the way it makes me feel - I'm feeling strong, and more relaxed about things, which is a big deal because o hai I am so anxious normally.

I'm 16 weeks now - we'll be getting our 20 week ultrasound in about a month, and then we find out if it's a boy or a girl! We definitely want to know, and man, I am excited about the ultrasound. We've had two this whole time - one at 5 weeks and one at 7 weeks - and we still haven't had one where the baby looked like, well, a BABY. so we're both really looking forward to seeing the tiny schmoo.

yep, I've got a belly now.

What else is new? I've been knitting a bunch on my Smock , and I'm getting there! I need to take a picture - I've almost finished the back and it looks like it will fit me, even as my belly gets bigger.

I've also been sewing here and there - I've started a few quilting projects. One is a string quilt, using the fabulous tutorial by film in the fridge and two jelly rolls of the Hello Betty fabric line from Moda:

string quilts are so. fun.

The squares are about 4.5 inches, which means I'll need approximately eleventy million to make an actual quilt, but I'm having a blast with them.

I've also started some log cabin squares:

Wonky log cabins!

These are also so fun. It was hard for me to pick fabrics at first, but I'm trying to just relax and see what looks good and not stress too hard about it. Both of these projects have potential as baby quilts, or wall hangings - who knows? I'm really enjoying making the squares right now.

ooh! I want to tell you about our new rug too. So I got an email way earlier this year from someone at csnrugs.com, saying they were interested in sending me a free rug of my choice if I would do a review on my blog. I was kinda thinking about, but then I mentioned it in passing to Jacob, who was all, UM YES DO THAT PLEASE, we need a freaking rug for the front hall. So! we agreed, and we picked out this rug.

It came almost right away, and it's actually pretty awesome. It's not the softest rug (it's made from cactus fibers), but since it's in the front hall, I think it's okay.

new rug.

It got dirty after about one week due to a sick doggy (poor Bella), and we were able to clean it super easily with water - you can't even tell anything was wrong with it. Our hall is a pretty high traffic area, and it's holding up very nicely after a month. And as a bonus, Bella absolutely freaking LOVES this rug. She lays on it constantly - it's kind of like her home base in the den.

o hai, this is MY rug

So, we're super happy with this rug. Thanks to csnrugs for sending it our way!

I'm off to knitknitknit and maybe sew some more. Hope you're having a great weekend!

hi there! it's funny that my last post was about summertime and now it's almost time for school to start... Athens is starting to feel like a college town again. Next week will be crazy with people moving into their dorms and no parking downtown and actual traffic in the mornings. le sigh. I can't complain *too* much since I work at the university..but summer is so peaceful here.

Anyways. I have news! I already spilled it on twitter and Flickr, so sorry if this is repetitious for some of you...

and here's the newest addition in progress.

Yep, I'm pregnant! I'm about 12.5 weeks. I have the beginnings of a belly - it feels huge to me already but I know it's not quite huge. Yet. We are really, really excited and a little bit freaking out and just very happy. I've been pretty nauseous and exhausted over the past few months, and it hasn't quite stopped yet, but I'm hoping my second trimester will bring some relief.

I've got lots of books to read and clothes to make and things NOT TO GOOGLE, and lots of resting to do. I seriously can't believe how tired I've been! Even in St. Croix, where all we did was relax, I was exhausted. But overall, I'm feeling pretty good. I just started prenatal yoga this week and I'm already sleeping better and feeling stronger. It's my first experience with yoga, and although I'm not very bendy right now, I'm learning.

So that's the big thing in my life right now! In knitting news, I finished Ishbel:

Finally done!

and started a top for me - Smock in The Simply Sublime Organic Cotton DK book.

in pretty Debbie Bliss Prima.

I also started another Ishbel - it's a seriously addictive pattern. Quick and easy with such gorgeous results! My plan is to make a bunch of them and then all my Christmas presents will be done. hee. I also have a ton of beautiful fabric for making clothes and I'm hoping to get an energy boost soon so I can make some dresses.

So, I've still been crafting, although it's mostly crafting that I can do from the couch. :) Luckily, knitting is just perfect for that. I'll be posting again soon to tell you about the rug we got - we love it, and Bella REALLY loves it.

Hope everyone is having a fantastic end of their summer!

This summer is flying. by. I can't believe it's almost the end of July! I feel like I've spent more time traveling than I have at home - for work and for fun - so I'm looking forward to staying put in August.

Not that I'm complaining - after all, our last trip was to St. Croix! We went for a week to visit the Virgin Islands Sustainable Farm Institute (VISFI), see old friends, and relax. Jacob was actually there through a grant from his work, but I got to tag along as well. YAY.

so relaxing.

The folks at VISFI are doing awesome stuff - their mission is to educate about sustainability and they are totally working with the community in St. Croix. And Nate, who is the program director there, is an old, old friend - we grew up in the same neighborhood! It was really fun to see him again and see this totally awesome place where he works and lives. We stayed at the farm for three days and ate delicious food and met great folks and relaxed. and I slept. A LOT. I mean, there was a hammock on a porch, people.

We also spent lots of time on the beach. We got to go snorkeling a bunch - and visited Buck Island, which is an amazing national park with a HUGE coral reef. It was so beautiful!

It was a fabulous trip, and I'd love to go back to the farm again! (except for the outhouse. I do not want to go back to the outhouse.) More pics on my Flickr - there are three sets labeled St. Croix.

So what else is new? I've been sewing and knitting, although my sewing frenzy has slowed down a bit. I have a bunch of patterns I want to try and some great fabric to use, but I just haven't had the energy lately. I did manage to put this one together:

<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2504/3744176667_da61487a9e.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="Trapeze Sundress"border="0" />
Trapeze Sundress from Weekend Sewing.

And, I've been working on pretty, pretty Ishbel. I totally heart this pattern.

AND, we're getting a free rug! CSNrugs.com is sending us a rug - we picked it out - so we can test it and review it. oh yes. We've been looking for an area rug for right by our front door, and CSN Rugs has a bunch of great area rugs to choose from. We got one that's all natural fibers, and I'm excited to see how it looks in our house. Bella is also excited to lay on it. I'll be posting a review once we get it in the house and try it out.

So, that's all I've got! We're going out of town one more time this weekend - to go to the wedding of the fabulous Kelly and Matt! It's going to be super fun times.

things are so, so busy. in the past month, I've been to Chicago (for fun) and New York (for work, and fun). I've also been teaching knitting classes at the yarn store, and sewing like a woman obsessed. (because I am.)

After I had some small successes with the Spring Ruffle Top, I decided to branch out and try some other clothes. I started with a skirt.

This is from the book Sew What! Skirts. It's a book without actual patterns in it - you take your measurements and draft your own pattern using the formulas they provide. It works pretty well, because you don't have to worry about picking the right size pattern - you just have to take your measurements right!

A-line skirt.

I totally recommend this book - I see myself making many more skirts using it.

So, after the skirt success, I got excited and decided to try for a dress. My first try was a dismal failure ... documented here ... but I decided to chalk it up to the pattern and fabric and try again.

The second time resulted in a wearable dress.

Simplicity 2925.

I learned a lot on this one - I put in a dress zipper, worked with curves, discovered that my upper and lower body are NOT the size in Simplicity dress patterns, and just got more comfortable trying a commercial pattern. I've already worn it to work!

And then I sewed a few more dresses:

1. 365.2.155 simple sundress for me., 2. Simple sundress., 3. Simplicity 2587, 4. Simplicity 3778 - without sash

The top two dresses were made from a free online pattern, Heather Ross's Simple Sundress. If you are on Flickr, you've probably seen this dress and heard lots of discussion about the pattern. For me, it was one of the easiest things I've made thus far, but I did have to wing on a few things, mainly the seam allowance (there isn't one in the pattern) and hemming the dress (there isn't a specific way mentioned in the pattern.) The shirring at the top is created by hand-winding your bobbin with elastic thread and using that along with regular thread. Despite those things that could possibly cause you trouble, I still think it's a good beginner pattern, because it's basically just two pieces of fabric, shirring, and voila! dress!

Commercial patterns are still very hard for me - I hate cutting the pieces, and all the fiddly bits that go along with it. But, three of the dresses on this page were sewn from commercial patterns, and I'm slowly learning to not be afraid. Simplicity has been my friend - the easy Simplicity patterns are actually easy - or easier - and I've been able to make wearable garments so far. All of this is to say, be not afraid if you want to try to sew clothes! Obviously all of these dresses have issues (sketchy zippers, uneven hems, and oh lordy the raw edges on the insides!!), and I still have a lot to learn, but I'm feeling more confident with every piece I sew. and OMG I am having so much fun.

Lest you think I've TOTALLY abandoned knitting, I have a finished knit too!

Featherweight Cardigan!

I finally finished this sweater, and I love it. (More details on Ravelry if you're interested.) It's perfect for wearing in the air conditioning in my office and I think it will be warm when it's cold outside too. I'm seriously considering making another one - it's just so wearable.

In other news - did you know that I started my knitting blog on June 5, 2003? here's what my first blog post said:

june 05, 2003.
3:18 PM

so here is my first attempt at having a web log. or a blog. i'm really doing this so I can keep track of my knitting. Can you believe how many people have knitting websites? It's a craze of monstrous proportions.

i am a brand spanking new knitter, and i still make lots of mistakes, but i really really love doing it, and i want to get better, so i can knit fancy cardigans and bee-yoo-tee-full sweaters,

and i have nothing better to do at work than surf the net for knitting pages, knitting patterns, knitting blogs.

my left hand actually is hurting from knitting, and probably from typing so much. (because I am a secretary, not because I am a crazy blogger. remember? this is my first one!)
email me with any good patterns that aren't too hard. or anything else you wanna say.

HAHAHAHA. that makes me giggle. That also means I've been blogging for 6 years earlier this month. I had plans to do a sappy blogiversary post but then work got busy and I had to travel and I just didn't have time. I just discovered my very first blog posts on my old geocities website a few weeks ago, and it was really fun to read through them and see where I was then. I'm so glad I have those posts to remember that time in my life, and I'm so glad I wrote that first post, because having this blog has literally changed my life - I've met some of my dearest friends through it, and tried many things and visited many places that I never would have otherwise.

So, thank you, bloggy readers, for making this such a fun thing to do for six years. We all have reasons for blogging - and I do it mostly for myself - but it sure is nice to have a fabulous community of people to share it with. Thank you so much!

I have many finished things to show you!

First of all, I finished my quilty wall hanging:

now we just need to hang it.

I had a really fun time making this quilt. I decided to try free-motion quilting for the first time, and although I had some real issues at first (the major one being that I kept forgetting to put my presser foot down), I'm very happy with the final result.

mmm, crinkly.

I practiced on a little quilted swatch first, and then just dove in on the quilt. It was time consuming and ate a lot of thread, but the result is cozy and crinkly and yummy - I will definitely be trying it again.

There has been other sewing too! I made my first top that I can wear, for real, in public:

The Spring Ruffle Top! Here's the tutorial.

I am so happy with this shirt. I'm such a newbie when it comes to sewing clothes, and the tutorial by Rae of Made by Rae was easy to follow. I definitely did a few things wrong this first time around - I misunderstood how to attach the ruffles and the chest band - but I was able to make it work! But that meant, of course, I needed to make another one:

this one's for Cathy!

She picked out the fabric - isn't it perfect? It's so nice to make a pattern again and fix all the mistakes you made the first time around. I guess that's why it's good to make a muslin when you sew a pattern for the first time (that just means you make the pattern out of practice fabric before using the good stuff.) I should maybe do that. hee.

I also made my dear friend JoAnna a nursing cover!

Yay JoAnna!

She really wanted a Hooter Hider, but when we looked at them in the store, we decided that we could make it ourselves. I used this tutorial and the awesome fabric that JoAnna picked out. It took less than an hour to make. YAY handmade!

o hai! this is a knitting blog! I am knitting too. I've finished one of my raffle prize socks and I'm about a third of the way through the second one. I've also started the Featherweight Cardigan in Jaggerspun Zephyr:

Progress.

I love this pattern! I want to make a bunch of them with all the laceweight yarn I have in my stash. I didn't swatch - bad knitter - and so next time around I might go down a needle size, but I'm hoping this one works out. I'm to the sleeves now!

I have more to show you and tell you, because I went to Maryland Sheep and Wool and bought pretty pretty things, but I need to go get ready for work. I'll post some yarny pics soon!

How is it already April? I feel like this year is moving so quickly. Pretty soon it will be summer and I'll be longing for the nice 65-70 degree weather we are having right now. oh, summers in Georgia, how I love/hate you.

Work has been super busy lately, which is great, but also makes me a little overwhelmed sometimes. That means that I get home from work and immediately want to do something crafty to relax.

There has been knitting:

Spelling Bee Raffle socks for Stephanie!
(the colors in this pic are a bit off - the blues are little more pastel than they are here.)

I went through several different versions of these socks before I landed on this combination: Monkeys + Mama E's sock yarn. It's a perfect match! I started some Monkeys with some other yarn, but the pooling started to get to me, so I tried again and so far, the colors are working out nicely with this yarn. They need a good blocking, obviously, but I'm happy with them. and this pattern is fun, y'all. at first I had to really pay attention to the pattern, but now I've got it memorized and I can just knitknitknit while I'm watching TV. LOVE.

There has also been sewing. More box bags, of course:

Box Bags and one zipper pouch, actually.

and some progress on my quilt wall hanging:

yay quilt.

This one is turning out just how I imagined. and Jacob likes it too, which is good since I'm planning to hang it up in our den. SInce I took this picture, I've added the last row of color blocks, and I'm about to add about 3 inches of brown all around and a blue binding. I think it's going to be perfect.

Since I've been sewing like a fiend, I've started reading some quilting/sewing blogs as well. If you haven't seen the Quilt Along posts over at Oh, Fransson! and you're wanting to get started quilted, check them out. She basically did a virtual quilt-along and went through her entire process from picking fabrics to binding and quilting. The posts are really clear and full of great info. I've definitely tagged a few of those posts (color choices, free motion quilting) to use in the future. I want to try and do free motion quilting for this wall hanging, but I need to practice A LOT before I do it.

While I'm sending you to other places on the Intarwebs, here are two more:

if you are a scrapbooker, check out my older sister Michelle's blog, The Impatient Scrapper. She makes all kinds of awesome mini albums and she's actually designing a mini-album kit for Creative Scrappers in April! she rocks.

My friend and indie sock dyer Melanie is having a raffle to help support her trip to the Sock Summit in August. Some of her fabulous prizes include a box bag made by me, and um hello delicious red Wollmeise sock yarn. Drooooool.

Another great contest! Orinda5 is having a free giveaway on her blog with some pretty amazing prizes, including Malabrigo, some gorgeous sock yarn, and a beautiful shawl pin. She had originally intended to run a raffle, but it turns out that it's against the law to run an online raffle in her state, so the prize-drawing is not linked to the donations. BUT. you could totally make a completely unrelated to the contest but still awesome donation while you are there! I did!

I've started another quilt while I'm working on the wall hanging because I am addicted - I'm experimenting with some scrappy strip quilting using this tutorial from Quiltville (and hello she is another awesome online resource that Carolyn introduced me to). I'll take some pictures this weekend if the strips aren't ugly. ha.

have a great Friday!

Hi y'all! The last time I posted, I was playing in snow - we ended up getting six inches, and lost power for two days. woot. it was actually sort of fun at first - we dragged our mattress out to the den and sat by the fire and played Scrabble by candlelight. It became not as fun when we woke up the next morning and it was COLD in our house.

But, I shall not complain, because today, a week later, it is 75 degrees. It's beautiful outside! It's also Spring Break at UGA, so I might take a couple of days off this week for the heck of it. We'll see how busy work is.

I've been really busy crafting lately, both knitting AND sewing. I finally finished my second quilt - a baby quilt for my dear friends Drew and Joanna, also know at the Teamies.

Stacked Coins.

I used the Stacked Coins pattern from Last Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts, which is a seriously lovely and awesome book. There are great directions in the back for basting your quilt, quilting, and also two different ways to do the binding. I love this book. And I think would be an excellent first quilt for anyone - it's very forgiving if you aren't so good at cutting straight (like me, for instance). I think the real challenge with this quilt is picking awesome colors.

So, finishing that quilt has made me want to make MORE quilts. and sew. A LOT. My Flickr contacts can attest to my, um, crazed sewing frenzy lately.

yay sewing time!

For the box bags, I've been using this fantastic tutorial by drago[knit]fly, with the modifications found here. It took me a few tries to understand what I was doing, but now I am comfortable doing it without checking the tutorial every five seconds.

Also, the zipper wasn't as scary as I thought it would be! The hardest thing for me is cutting STRAIGHT. I am so bad at it, and yes I have a rotary cutter and cutting mat and rulers and still I suck at it. that's why I need to make all of these bags! to practice!

For the zipper pouches, I used Caro's sew a zippered wristlet tutorial - super clear and she has a great Flickr set with detailed photos to go along with it. The zipper on top is harder for me - I haven't quite figured it out yet. but I'm getting there. The last little purse is this free pattern called the Buttercup Bag at Made by Rae.

Ack, I have the sewing bug, y'all. Next up, after eleventy million bags, is a quilty wall hanging for our den. I've chosen a dark brown background and some variations on teal and aqua as my color palette (because that's what is already in our den):

fabric pile.

I'm still nailing down exactly what I want to do, but I think I've got a plan. A loose plan.

I haven't totally abandoned knitting though! I'm still plugging away on both my Tapestry Cowl and my Francis Revisited:

I'm getting really close!

As you can see, I opted for short sleeves - it's already getting hot here again, and I want to be able to wear this year-round. well, maybe not in August, but you know what I mean. I can't wait for this sweater to be finished!

That's about it for now. Work is good, and I'm still BODYPUMPing (although this week is Spring Break so it's canceled. I guess I could get out and run or walk since it's so nice out. maybe.) I know some of you are still having wintry weather - I hope spring heads your way soon!

We totally got our mulligan for the Spelling Bee, y'all! I think we deserved TWO mulligans, because we raised more money than any other team by $700! With your totally awesome help, the Triplets raised $1200 for the Athens-Clarke Literacy Council. We were so proud handing our donation envelope to the Bee organizers! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. We beat last year's total by $500, which is really amazing.

We didn't win the bee - we made it through 9 rounds, though, and were the fourth runner-up team. The word that got us was "Kinshasa" - it's the capital of the Republic of Congo, and we spelled "Kinchasa", but I will also say that the pronouncer totally pronounced it with a "ch" instead of an "sh" and I think we would've spelled it right if he'd said it right. not that I'm bitter. ;) But we had lots of fun, and we got several rounds of hard words correct, including "quoin" (an architecture term which means the corner stones of brick or stone walls) and "philately" (stamp collecting).

I bet you wanna hear about the prize winners though, right?!?! I've got your prize winners right here! We had a total of 167 entries for the contest. All the entries were entered into a spreadsheet, and the winners were selected using a random number generator.

Hi there!

I'm interrupting this not-so-frequently-updated blog to announce a contest. a contest for hand-knit socks and other yarny prizes. FOR YOU.

You may remember last year, around this same time, I participated in a charity spelling bee, also known as The Spirited Spell-Off Spectacle, here in Athens. Well, I'm doing it again, with my same trusty teammates from before: my twin sister Cathy and my friend Chip. The three of us form The Triplets (har!) and we are super excited about this year's bee.

Team Triplets!

The event is a fundraiser for the Athens Clarke Literacy Council. They promote and support adult literacy in Athens, Georgia, and they do good work.

At this team spelling bee, the six teams that raise the most money for the Athens Clarke Literacy Council are granted a mulligan, which means you can miss one word and still stay in the competition. So, we've been raising money to support our team. Any amount you can afford will help us, and it all goes to a great cause - promoting and supporting adult literacy.

Last year, with your help, our team raised the most money for the cause and earned our mulligan, which helped us finish second runner-up in the bee.

So this is where you come in! Every $5.00 donation will get your name in a drawing. At the end of the contest, I'll randomly pick a name, and I'll knit the winner a pair of socks in your favorite colors. All the money donated will go directly to the Athens Clarke Literacy Council.

UPDATE! We have additional raffle prizes! which means that more than one person can win! woooot!

It is so nice here, y'all. It's been in the upper 60s - lower 70s for almost a week now, and it's unbelievable. I'm hoping that spring is actually here to stay, although I know that's totally wishful thinking and we'll probably have more cold spells. But sitting outside in the sun to eat brunch and teaching knitting on the back porch of Main Street has been sooooo nice.

Of course, my timing is impeccable because I've just finished winter hats for me and Jacob right when the weather gets warm! HA. I discovered Jared Flood's fabulous Turn a Square pattern on Ravelry and totally fell in love with it. It's super easy and SO fast - I finished both of these hats in about a day or so (per hat). And, you can do stripeys like the pattern:

stripes, for Jacob.

Or, you can do one with just one skein of mmmmalabrigo:

the Malabrigo one is all for me me me.

Woot. Totally versatile and awesome. and perfect for those 70 degree days we've been having. Har.

I'm still plugging away on the Tapestry Cowl. I'm getting faster at finishing a round - I actually did THREE rounds last night, which is totally a record for me and this pattern - but I'm convinced there's a better way to wrangle the two colors. Are there any English knitters out there who have double knitting tips for me? I've been practicing my Continental knitting, but the gauge is still too crazy for me to switch to Continental on this project.

And, my take-with-me-everywhere knitting is a new project: Francis Revisited. I may have used some of my knit teaching money to get some fantastic Sublime Cashmere Merino Silk Aran in Granite and oh my god I am loving this yarn. I couldn't get gauge, so I changed the numbers a bit and now I'm just knitting away. I'm hoping I can finish this soon and wear it a bit before it gets too hot in Georgia for any kind of long sleeves.

ohhh, this yarn. it's so lovely.

I really have been knitting a lot lately. Teaching at the yarn store is making it easier for me to justify new shiny yarn purchases, which makes me excited about new projects, which means I am a knitting. machine. and I like it that way!

Other than knitting, I'm finishing up a quilt,Flickring, Raveling, BODYPUMPing, and watching American Idol intently. Work is good - lots of graphic design lately, which I love. YAY.
