sigh of relief

I passed the GRE.

Hooray! I actually did much better than I thought I would, and my verbal and math scores were only 40 points apart! hahahahahahaha. (The math gods are smiling down on me, and also snickering at me behind their hands.) So, thanks for all the good luck and happy wishes and prayers that you sent my way ... clearly they helped!

I don't have a Tubey picture yet, because Cathy wants to be the model (and should be, since it was knitted especially for her) and she lives an hour away. Everyone should now leave comments about how Cathy needs to come up to Athens one day next week for dinner and a photo session. Ahem.

Since Tubey is now complete, I can 'fess up: I cheated on Tubey a little bit when the ribbing was too much to handle. It was ... the Hourglass Sweater from Last Minute Knitted Gifts.

Here's about 12 inches of the body.

I'm using Paton's Classic Wool, purchased at my local Michael's. Can I tell you that I really love this yarn? It's soft, it's cheap, and it's 100% wool. Holla. Our Michael's *just* started carrying the Classic Wool, and I got really excited when I saw the display. I am a little afraid that this yarn won't have the drape of the original yarn in the pattern but I had to substitute ... (I think it's Cash Iroha, which is beautiful, but, HI, almost $11 for 99 yards? not in my budget this week.) I hope it will be good. It feels good, anyways.

I also re-visited an old favorite this week in hopes of making it more wearable. You may remember the Brown Beauty. I love the way this sweater looks, but the collar was just too wide to be practical. My bra straps always show, and it fall forward too far, etc. So, I decided to pull out the crochet edge and rework the collar in tight ribbing.

Here she is without a collar.

I picked stitches all around the collar, and used size 5 circulars and 1 x 1 ribbing. Then, after I knit the ribbing for about 1.5 inches, I bound off tightly. Looked MUCH better, but I still didn't like that gap where the buttonhole was...soooo, I seamed the ribbing up above the gap and made it a keyhole (good idea, HEJ.)

:: picture of sweater with keyhole would be here if I'd remembered to take one ::

anyways, it's much better. I actually wore it this week and didn't have to worry about rocking the Flashdance look with a too-wide collar. Fixed! I will put a picture of the fixed sweater in my gallery. Someday.

The yarn for my own Tubey has arrived, and I have a long car trip this weekend, so you know what that means: I will embark on the first tube. It's great car or movie knitting, since there's all that stockinette followed by all that ribbing. I'm still perfecting my knitting-ribbing-in-the-dark abilities, so here's my reminder to myself: don't forget to bring Jacob's headlamp.

Have a good weekend. Next step in grad school process: recommendations and personal statement. Woot.

Wow, you got the results back quickly! I guess GRE stuff has changed in the 30 years since I took it, huh? {makes note to self to remember that We Are Now In the 21st Century, and There Are Computers.)

Congrats!

I knew it, I KNEW it! I knew you'd fly through that test and come out the other side with fantastic results! And how cool is it that you get your score so quickly -- when I took the LSAT I had to wait WEEKS and it just about killed me.

Congrats!

CONGRATULATIONS, MY DEAR! I knew you'd pass. You're too articulate and clever on your blog not to be able to pass that GRE. All your knitting problem-solving skills show that you have a GREAT MIND!

Yeah yeah yeah!!!! Are you going to go to grad school in California~!!! Let's start rumors. Congrats to you and all that hard work studying. Yeah!

Posted by: silvia at January 20, 2006 12:32 AM

Dude, the Flashdance look is all the rage in Athens right now, especially tonight. There must have been some stupid sorority girl 80s re-enactment holiday going on, just an hour ago I saw whole bunches of girls going around downtown wearing the Flashdancey shirts with colourful satin shorts, black nylons, sport socks and runners. Please tell me it's some stupid sorority thing and not a real trend. There were some chicks in gold togas too, so I'm guessing, not a real trend. Oh, and they were all drunk.

Congrats on passing the GRE, but we all knew you'd do it. ;)

And, hey, are we on for lunch tomorrow or what?

WOOHOO! SO happy you passed. I'd be more worried about the personal statement, but we've already discussed my preference for math over writing. I'm sure you'll kick ass on it too. I love love love that green color.

Oh, and tell super twin part 2 to get her booty to see you. We need pictures, yo!

Congrats on the GRE. Don't you love that you get your score RIGHT AWAY? That was my favorite part. Your sweaters look beautiful! I wish I could get my hands on some nice yarn like that classic wool. I love the hourglass sweater so much--it is so wearable--that I want one in every color!

Hurray, hurray, hurray! Good for you! I knew you could do it!

Congratulations! What great news!

The paton's classic is great - just watch the pilling!

Posted by: Dani at January 19, 2006 06:26 PM

But, the Flashdance look is coming back. (Or so I read - I didn't do it the first time around, and I will continue to mock those who wear it THIS time around, but still.)
Congrats on the GRE - that's a pretty major accomplishment.
Also, I'm new to your blog, and I'd like to congratulate you for spelling your name properly, and to mention how many of your 100 things also apply to me.

Posted by: Carrie at January 19, 2006 04:50 PM

Congrats Carrie! I agree with AM, just model it and pretend you're Cathy.

Wahoo! Did you have those drinks that I told you to?
And while I am waiting (impatiently) for your sister to come and model Tubey, I am very happy to see a pic of your Hourglass! Yay! I've been looking for yarn subs for that (I ain't made of money over here!) and was considering KnitPicks Andean Silk but now I will also consider Paton's Classic Wool! Decisions decisions...

And couldn't you just take a picture of yourself in tubey and say that it was Cathy? I mean, you are twins and all...

WOOHOO! Congrats on passing the GRE! You are one smart Schmoo. I was sending you good math vibes, but you didn't even need them. :)
