Debbie Downer Feels Better

I am in a foul, foul mood today. There are many reasons for said mood. One reason might be that the air conditioning in my car has started making a horrible noise, a noise that tells me that my car is dying, and the noise only stops when I turn off the AC. Which means no AC for me today. And it's 94 today. And I sweat. A lot.

Another reason might be that I woke up too late to take a shower and then I forgot my makeup so I look like this today (click for Exhibit A.) No makeup + extra sweaty + extra crusty healing tattoo = scary Carrie.

Aside from that, I made some miscalculations with my checking account (read: I didn't write things down) and now I have five overdraft fees. Yes, that's right. I SUCK.
I was going to sell some of my yarn to make up the difference, but I decided that
1. I don't have enough sellable yarn to cover the overdraft fees.
2. SELL YARN AM I CRAZY.
Here's the picture I was GOING to post to entice buyers.

brooksfarmclose.jpg
Yummy, yummy Brooks Farm. Not for sale. Yet.

Anywho. There you have it. I'm totally whining and complaining, I know, but it seems like it's all happening on one day.

I actually posted all of that yesterday, and I'm feeling a bit better today. I called the Big Bank and sounded truly pathetic and they actually overturned one of my overdraft fees. Hooray! And I had a yummy dinner with Jacob that we actually cooked together (those who know me will know that I DO NOT COOK.) Bottom line, I am a lucky schmoo with a great life but I can't manage my money worth a shit and I am going to work really hard to improve that.

So.

Yarn pics. HighEnergyJenny gave me delicious yarn for my birthday, yarn that covers both of my current obsessions: socks and shawls. Yahoo. Here is the shawly yumminess:

jaggeryum.jpg
Jaggerspun. So soft and pretty.

I've already started a project with this yarn - Kiri, a beautiful shawl pattern by Polly of All Tangled Up -- and I'm loving it. I originally started with 7s, but the lace was too loose for me, so I changed to 6s and now it's perfect. Well, the lace ain't perfect... but the needle size is. Here's the evidence:

kiri.jpg
One day, Little Kiri will be a grown-up shawl. One day!

The sock yarn is Lorna's Laces, in a most lovely colorway:

sockyum.jpg
Lovely greens and blues.

And of course, the bag to hold it all in, courtesy of Anne Marie :

bagyum.jpg
A water bottle totally fits in one of those pockets too.
I *heart* this bag.

To top of all the wonderful knitty gifts from my friends, the choir at the church where I play the piano (and accompany the choir) gave me a gift certificate to LYS Main Street Yarns!! Total surprise, and I was so touched. Yay.

I've been alternating between several projects: Jacob's Second Sock, another hemp yarn shawl (for me!), the drop stitch scarf in Colinette Giotto, and of course, Kiri. Last night I knitted Kiri while watching Closer (so. depressing.), but this past weekend I brought the hemp shawl (it's garter stitch) along to a party with some old friends and knitted on it every now and then.

hemp2.jpg
Almost done.

Speaking of said party, listen to the question I got from an old friend this weekend: "Hey Carrie, can I ask you a question? And I mean this in the most complimentary way possible..... (DANGER! DANGER!) ..... has your ass gotten bigger?"

um. yes. but do you have to point it out?!?!?!?!?!!? Dear Lord.

I am loving that Lorna's Laces. Gorgeous gorgeous colors.

And that bag is MONSTROUS!

Ooooh... I heart that bag too... a lot! Please share brand/store/any available information! =) I think that I need it.

Just a recommendation from a former bank teller... ASK for all or some of your fees back from the bank.... yes they are allowed to do that... (hey if they charged you five they might refund you four right??)...it doesn't hurt to ask, and all they can say is no...

Carrie Schmoo,
Your ass is BANGING!!!!! If only I had such a high and mighty ass, my nightlife would be much more exciting (at least for other people).
And you do look sad in exhibit A: but your skin looks great. And as for the AC, it's a damn shame that it may go out in this heat. You'll have to sponge bath-it at work.

Where do I find a bag like that? I totally MUST have a bag like that!!

Posted by: MX at July 21, 2005 01:13 PM

It must be going around. I just messed up my checking account, too! So, you are definitely not alone this month. The planets have not aligned in our favor. :(

Posted by: Jean at July 21, 2005 11:45 AM

I'm so sorry for your bad day, I know exactly how you feel. Don't sell your yarn though, you'll regret it, and it's such pretty yarn.

The needle your knitting the shawl on, what is it?

Love, love, love the bag.

happy belated birthday!!!!! i second lelah for thinking you're a tease for showing that Brooks Farm yarn. i'm salivating here at work.

Posted by: lynette at July 21, 2005 09:43 AM

hi carrie! great birthday booty haul! i mean like pirate's booty, not junk in the trunk booty.
i started blogging again after forever so check it out! yay!

Posted by: vanessa at July 21, 2005 09:41 AM

You know, for some reason I always seem to have money problems right around my birthday. As in, there's always some big bill or something that sucks up any birthday money I may have received. This year it is all about moving, paying off utility bills, AND paying for a root canal at the same time. But I'm going to get through it OK.

I know you will think I'm insane but I like that picture of you, even if you are making a sort of don't-mess-with-me face. And I say yay for a bigger butt, too. I got a button at My My (http://mymy.girlswirl.net/) that says "I like my big ass" a while ago. Unfortunately since the move I can't find it, but hopefully it will turn up. I've worn it out a few times and it freaks people out in a great way.

Posted by: susan at July 21, 2005 09:29 AM

ooh! You're doing kiri! Me too!

I hope your day gets less sweaty, less scabby, and gets cooler all around.

:) x/o

Posted by: heather at July 21, 2005 08:46 AM

I had NO idea friends commented on the size of body parts of other friends. Ouch! I prefer denial thank you very much!

Great bag and glad to hear you are having a better day. You deserve it :)

Posted by: maia at July 21, 2005 12:10 AM

Firstly, I heart your bag too. And now I *need* one.

Secondly, I can tell your kiri is going to be beautiful already - I love the colour your birthday yarn.

Thirdly, my AC dyed on me last year while we were on vacation, on the hottest day *ever*. It happened in stages and ended with this really loud clicking sound. I mean really loud. You know how when people play their bass really loud - I was annoying in that way but with clicking. Ummmm, we haven't fixed it yet. The car works fine and so does the heater and the air vents.

Posted by: Tiffany at July 20, 2005 11:41 PM

I am so with you on the overdraft fees. They are the worst! I took me a few times before I learned my lesson. As for your AC, that happened to me last summer. Had to have the car towed, then get it fixed, since it wouldn't run period. Ugh.

As for your Ass...The Questioner is obviously insecure about something, maybe his lack of something big?

Posted by: Liz at July 20, 2005 11:03 PM

OMG! I can NOT believe someone asked you that!! I think I may have used those knitting needles as a weapon right then and there. Asses and their size are just not party conversation.

Sorry about the bank woes - sheesh. Been there - done that - KNOW it sucks.

Posted by: Kathy at July 20, 2005 09:53 PM

Carrie, I want the Brooks farm ....love it...tell me how much and the check will be on it way!!! I need to enhance my stash!!!

Posted by: Sylvia at July 20, 2005 09:39 PM

What a horrible question! -- I was once asked by an ex co-worker who I ran into while wearing my A-line (admittedly not flattering) trench coat when my "next" one was due (NOT!)

Great birthday presents -- enjoy!!

Posted by: kathy at July 20, 2005 09:07 PM

I love the shawl pattern--thanks for sharing. I'm crazy for the look of kidsilk haze. Maybe someday I'll brave trying socks. Those Lorna colors are quite tempting. Hope your finances and air-conditioning all look up soon!

Posted by: Courtney at July 20, 2005 08:55 PM

Oooh - noises from AC=bad. It's probably your water pump - the same thing happened to me and it cost a lot of $$$$$ to fix (it completely busted, overheated the car, while on the freeway, of course, and I lost my power steering - good times.) I would check that out pronto! :)

I too am loving the socks/shawls now, and am envious of your pretty yarn. Can't wait to see how Kiri turns out - she is next on my list!

Posted by: Jenn at July 20, 2005 08:49 PM

So sorry yesterday was crapola - but today was better, right?

Excellent gifts - your excellent friends have excellent taste! Oh, yeah, well, except the one who made the ass comment. Should've told that "friend" it takes one to know one. Ass. Big Ass.

Posted by: Cara at July 20, 2005 07:21 PM

Oy, I know what you mean about the overdraft fees and the inability to manage money in the way a proper adult should. I am totally shitty with my money and I am totally ashamed of it. I am sure my credit score is crap and the bank hates me...oh well.

But the yarn, oh the yarn, is great my dear! You've inspired me to make a shawl here soon. I just know what pattern I should start on...suggestions?

Posted by: Skylar at July 20, 2005 06:56 PM

re: the overdraft charges...i'm right there w/ ya on this one...i had 9...count them 9!!!! overdraft charges a couple weeks ago all in one day. the bank generously gave back four, but that's still alot!! i, too, cannot manage money worth a crap, so i feel ur pain! glad today is better than yesterday for you :)
ps - i love the blog...been out here lurking for awhile and finally thought i would comment. :)

This is a comment of a comment! Lara, I once had a $28 check bounce TWICE, when I had over $700 in the account both times... did a lil digging, and when I canceled my long distance provider, they encoded said check for A THOUSAND DOLLARS, and my bank just went by the encoding, and didn't check the amount. I will never use said long distance company again, because when I pointed this out, they acted like it was my fault, and insisted that if I didn't do an electronic check then and there for the $28, that they would sick a collection company on me! three months later, they send me A BILL for the $1000, and I called them up and explained that I NEVER had such a bill, and they dropped it then and there. I assumed an internal error untill that point, now I suspect a internal theif.

Posted by: Teresa at July 20, 2005 05:56 PM

No. S/he. Didn't! I have my 10-year(!) HS reunion coming up Saturday, and I can totally hear someone saying that.

Love the bag!

Posted by: Kelly at July 20, 2005 04:51 PM

1) It would take a LOT to make a cutie like YOU look scary. You look surrrious, for sure, but NOT scary.

2) If it's any consolation, last week I realized that, according to MY checkbook, I thought I had a THOUSAND dollars MORE than the BANK said I had. Yes, you read that right. I lost $1000. You TOTALLY feel better, don't you?

3)um, Broook's Farrrmmmm {{droool}} I think I need to go home RIGHT NOW and fondle MINE.

Posted by: Lara at July 20, 2005 04:07 PM

Oh boy! I am so mad at your friend! Who says shit like that?! argh.

I have overdraft protection on my account and THANK GOD I do because otherwise I would be soooo poor. I go into it every week or so. (dumbass!)

I have done that makeup thing before... I hate that! Glad you survived the day though!

Do you know what that Lorna's Laces colorway is? so pretty!

Posted by: frecklegirl at July 20, 2005 04:01 PM

Overdrafty schmoo, you.
That orange knitting bag is utilitarian shiek!

Posted by: Post-urban Naturalist at July 20, 2005 03:36 PM

Girl, I hear ya on the money thing. I, um, made a wee miscalculation myself last week, and uh....let's just say NOT GOOD. Moving right along....yarn? So pretty. I love that Lorna's Laces colorway. And yes, you ARE a tease for posting the Brooks Farm. The bag? PERFECT. Where did the lovely Miss Anne Marie find that? That thing is cool. I can't wait to see how the latest shawls turn out. Glad you are feeling better, and hope your scabby-ness (so not a word) is almost over.

Posted by: Sarah at July 20, 2005 03:28 PM

Carrie, I am sorry that you had that crap day (they're the bummer of all bummers), but I am glad to hear you're enjoying life more today. You ARE a lucky schmoo! Lovely yarn and nummy meals, and overturned overdraft fees, hooray (I hate overdraft fees. They are so killer. Trust me, I know!).

I'm so sorry I missed your birthday! I have been really crap at playing online lately. Bah. I hope you and Cathy had a SUPER day together!

Posted by: Giao at July 20, 2005 03:10 PM

i'm drooling over all of your yarn! and that bag is goregous! (ok i can't spell, but the bag is great!)

It sounds like you had a wonderful birthday & got some great booty to go with your great bootie. :P (sorry I couldn't resist)

Posted by: elizabeth at July 20, 2005 02:48 PM

Hi.
My bank (WM) has this thing you sign up for where you get charged a flat rate per day of overdraft no matter how many you bounce instead of each. I signed up for free. Maybe you could ask if they have something like that.
