I Went to Dragon*Con 2008...
and all I got were these completely awesome pictures of me with celebrities.
Like this one:

James Callis (Gaius Baltar on Battlestar Galactica)
and also this one:

Me with Aaron Douglas (Chief Tyrol on Battlestar Galactica)
oh. I was such a fangirl this weekend, I'm not going to lie. I totally got starstruck at Dragon*Con. For those who don't know, Dragon*Con is a big old science fiction/fantasy/anime/comics/whatever else convention that happens every year in Atlanta. We decided to go this year because so many people from Battlestar Galactica were there, and DUDE it was so worth it. Carolyn even came down for it!
We had so much fun. Cathy joined us, and we even ran into Wes and Jacob a few times while we were there. It was just a totally interesting experience - my first time at a convention - and I am so going back next year. In addition to getting to meet BSG peeps and take pictures and generally be silly rabid fans, we also attended two Battlestar Galactica panels...

From L to R:
Tahmoh Penikett, Michael Hogan, Edward James Olmos, Kevin Grazier.
or, Helo, Col. Tigh, Commander Adama, and the science advisor for BSG.
We also ate a lot of good meals, saw lots of crazy costumes, and spent a lot of time waiting in lines (so I got a decent amount of knitting done). If you want to see some of the crazy costumes and more of the fun time rabid fan pics, here's a link to my Flickr set: [ Dragon*Con 2008 ]
Now - you didn't think I'd let Carolyn come to town without making her quilt, right? Of course not! We managed to squeeze in some quilting when we weren't being geeky fans. And I am so excited because I am really close to having my very first finished quilt! Carolyn helped me finish quilting the border of my quilt and then showed me how to do a double-fold binding on the edges. She got me started, and now I'm working on finishing:

Binding!
We used the machine to sew it on the top, and now I'm blind-stitching the bottom. Carolyn said she liked this part, and I was a bit hesitant when I saw what I had to do, but it IS fun to watch the binding come together. I can't wait to finish the binding and wash this sucker. And then start a new one! oh boy!!!
In other crafty news, I'm *this* close to finishing my February Lady Sweater. Obviously I didn't finish for the Ravelympics (FAIL), but I got pretty far. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the first sleeve, so all I have left is 1 and 1/4 sleeves!
That's all I've got for now. It's been exactly one month since I last posted, so I'm hoping I can get to the blog more often this month.

Just saw your entry... doing a google for "Klingon knitting"... I try to hit DragonCon every year. Glad to hear someone else brought their knitting, but I didn't think to have it in line with me. Good idea! I just learned how this year, and I'm still picking up one type of stitch at a time. I beginning to think someone should do a DragonCon knitting circle during the con... they do drum circles after all... Not a panel, really, just let people know to bring their knitting (or crocheting or whatever craft) gear with them and knit together. I wonder if anyone has ever started one of those at a con? They could have a poster for each genre about knitting... "Knitting... a craft for a true Klingon warrior"... we could make Jayne hats or whatever... do you think that kind of idea would fly?

Hee! I keep thinking about hitting Dragon*Con one of these years; I've got friends in one of the Klingon brigades that keep saying they'll give me space in their room.
(Just between you and me, staying at the Klingon hotel may be a bit more than I can handle. Especially since I tend to costume Rihannsu..)
Looks like it was a blast!!

That is beyond awesome. I'm always glad to see someone else geeking out about BSG (or knitting, or sewing, etc.) as much as I do. :)

Looks like you had such a fun time! Good for you!!! And the corner of your quilt is exquisite. My mom is an avid quilter but I have never ventured into it. Still just knitting and loving it!

Now, BSG is not one of my things...but that guy in the top picture? Pretty hot.
Looks like it was a good time...I'm bummed for Sarah that she didn't get to go.

OMG, Baltar! Squee! I love that t-shirt Aaron Douglas is wearing too. I'm in the same boat as Terra, waiting for the latest season of BSG to come out on DVD, it's brutal.

What did you do to quilt the top? The few stitches I can see look so good. Please don't tell me you did it by hand... I'll be insanely jealous of your skills!!!
I love binding a quilt, that means it's almost done! YIPEEE

"Sewn," not "sewed." LOL.
*scurries off to get coffee*

I'm gettin' my quilt on, too - last bit of quilting around the border, and on Saturday I'm going be learning how to do my very first binding...same thing, machine sewed on one side, blind handstitching on the back.
And then, I will have my very first quilt. :) Can't wait to see what your finished quilt looks like!
Posted by amanda | September 3, 2008 8:18 AM
That is so frakking cool! I am jealous. :)

BSG! I'm feeling so much withdrawal. We watched the first three seasons on dvd and don't have cable. Now we wait. And avoid all media spoilers. It's killing me.
Posted by Terra | September 3, 2008 7:28 AM
It looks like a super fun weekend and I'm glad Carolyn got to meet her new husband.
Your quilt corner looks great! I'm in awe of that neat little thing. So cute.

Just to be clear - you went to TWO battlestar panels...but I went to THREE! ;) and come on, doesn't Dollhouse deserve at least a brief mention?
sincerely, mrs. penikett.
