Things That Make You Go Hmmmm.
It's been ... a week. I'm not going to lie: I'm a tad grumpy. There are things in my life that I have no control over -- things I will never be able to change -- that are currently making me a grumpy. schmoo. Harumph.
But I really can't complain too much -- life is mostly good, and the weather here is freakin' beautiful. BEE-YOO-TEE-FULL. I'm talking 70 degrees and breezy. (Don't hate me, my Northern friends.) And? And!! Spring Break is next week, and while I do officially have to work, I've decided that I might take a short little vacation and fly up to New York. Yayayayayay! Me and my sis are going to shop and hang out and eat good food and visit yarn stores. Suggestions? (Trip contingent on a plane ticket, but I think I'm going to be able to swing it.) It's cold up there, right?
Trip Trip Trip. This will probably mean no Maryland Sheep and Wool this year, but I need a vacation and this is a perfect opportunity. Hopefully I will have a finished pair of Anemois in the mail by the time I leave, and a finished Forecast to wear.

Here's where I am tonight.
There! That's my challenge to myself: finish Anemois and Forecast by Wednesday of next week. Then I can actually wear Forecast in cold weather! It's a plan.
In honor of happy things, here's a picture of my cutecute nephewschmoo.

He didn't like my flash. Schmoo!
Now, a meme.
Stolen from Carolyn.

New(ish) in Brooklyn is Brooklyn General. Wonderful yarn as well as some fabrics and buttons and notions and what=have-you. My favorite spot now.

Have a great time! Here is my (super-long) take on the shops I've been to:
Seaport: A huge variety of yarns and a crazy kind of set-up. Cash or check only. There is a Chase atm in the pharmacy across the street. School Products: High end fiber choices in a no-frills environment. The Point: A charming place to stop in for a cup of tea and a skein--but not a ton of product. Bonus: Purl is a 5 minute walk from The Point, so it's a two-fer and Purl has a fairly comprehensive selection--plus Moving Mud shawlpins. Habu: Super specialty, more of a wholesale showroom than a yarn shop. Knitty City: Nice selection, nice folks. The Yarn Company: A similar selection. String moved/is moving, so maybe it's a bigger space than it was previously--it was rather small. On the Lower East Side craving a cuppa and some Koigu? Knit NY. There was another shop near the village on one of the avenues--can't remember the name, but I had a rotten experience and I wouldn't go back. I haven't been to any shops in Brooklyn, but I'm headed there on the next visit! For what it's worth, on the Upper West Side I'd go to Knitty City. (Then, take a stroll down B'way to Lincoln Center and hit Shun Lee or Shun Lee Cafe for the best Orange Beef in the world. Yum!) I'd go to Seaport again for the huge selection. It is a weird set-up, though, and not a place to hang out in that cozy-yarn-shop-hang-out-kind-of-way. I'd go to School Products particularly if I was in the market for cashmere but not to soak up any atmosphere. In the Village, try to hit both Purl and The Point--both have a lot of charm in my opinion. HopStop.com is a great website for directions. They even have pictures of what it looks like when you come up from the subway so you can get your bearings. Genius! Whew! Sorry for the windy post!

what do you MEAN no S&W!?!?!? TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!
Posted by Lara | March 8, 2007 9:44 PM
Seaport Yarns is as amazing as everyone says. Definitely make sure you go there!! Other good places are the Point, Purl, and String. I know knitters who swear by School Products but I've never been.
It's absurdly cold right now but is supposed to be a much more pleasant 40-50 next week.
Hang in there and hope you make it up here

Reading your meme made me realise we would have been in the same year at school =D and 5 years ago I was also taking 2 years out. In autumn 2002 I went back to uni to do a teaching postgrad.
I wanted to say (second random comment coming up) that when you knit stuff and put up pictures, I want to knit it. Like the Central park Hoody - I bought the magazine for the pattern based on your knit, and if I'd just seen it in the mag, I would have flipped right over to the next page! And the same with Forecast - I don't like the yarn it is knit in on Knitty.
So, yeah. You are inspirational. That was my stalker comment. I'll just go now. Thanks!

Yep. Cold here. Quite cold. Let me know what your itinerary looks like. Maybe we can meet up?

Reading your meme made me think of where I was back then...*sigh* How nice was it to not worry about work or cars or anything like that?! All I was concerned with was when the next slumber party would be. Hee hee...

Digging those mittens! And the schmoo (pre-flash freakout, lol).
Hey, what's up with AM's site...it's asking for a password! Very mysterious, lol!
I think the mood is pretty common this time of year...not quite Spring...but close enough to make you tired of Winter, lol!

Hey Sweetie, sorry to hear you've been feeling down of late. I was a complete basket case/bitch this week, and actually cried the other night from exhaustion and stress (and the prospect of having to ride my bike home after 11 at night caused me to lose it a little). Spring break can't come soon enough, I'm contemplating taking my students out for ice cream tomorrow instead of making them stay in class and draw.
Do you want to hook up for lunch some time this week, either before or after your trip? You can come by and meet the schmoo I'm babysitting for the break, you'll love her.

The grumps are going around. NYC in March is f-ing cold and windy, like today. Or it could be pleasant and warmer (I wish) Check yahoo weather before you go. Although I work in NYC, I've only been to Seaport Yarn (35 William Street, 5th floor) - nothing like it; and Purl in Soho, which is lovely and some yummy restaurants and other shopping close by. Have fun!

I have crush on Jack too. Did you watch last night?

Ooh, Schmoo! Your trip sounds fabulous. I'll be doing an NYC weekend in May and I can't wait. Let me know how it goes- I'm gathering recommendations!

hey sorry that you're a bit grumpy... we all get those weeks don't we (Arguh! To situations out of our control!) If you get up here to NYC- Seaport Yarns is apparently the Mecca Yarn Shop of the Tri-State area.
I love that meme, maybe i'll give it a whirl, I'm actualy around the same age as you just two years back... oh and i totally went to a catholic school... ahh uniforms. the mittens are gorgeous! you'll need em for our COLD weather!
Posted by margaux | March 8, 2007 9:19 AM
aw damn! 70 degree weather AND you mention that you may come to NYC next week?! my due date is next thursday so i'm not sure if i could see you :( but i'm sure you'll have a rockin' good time. you'll have to stop by and see the spiders on friday if you can.

It sounds to me like Miss Bella has some work to do. In our house, at least, Panda feels entirely responsible for managing our happiness. Leo yelling at the computer? Panda is there. Me crying during a movie? Panda is there. General frustration with life? You know who's there.
Seriously, though, here's hoping things getting better, or at least less frustrating. Nephew is adorable.
The meme is cute. I am trying to imagine the person who is that concerned with "partying." hehe
Posted by Marnie | March 8, 2007 9:12 AM
Nephew is so cute! It was fun to read Where You Were and Where You Are. It got me thinking. I am 5 years older than you and while it doesn't seem like much now, in 1987 it was. Thanks for the memories!
Posted by Michelle | March 8, 2007 8:59 AM
I sooooo hope you get to go to NYC. I swear, it is terrible to have to be working during spring break...I've done it several years in a row & just am completely grumpy to be working. So not. this. year! Am meeting Carrie O from Molly's up in Gatlinburg for some best friend bonding time.
If you need to vent--call, email, or maybe we can grab lunch...
Posted by Hannah | March 8, 2007 8:57 AM
It is really cold here in NY! We have snow on the ground... But, you're right, that's the perfect opportunity to wear Forecast and the Anemoi mittens! I hope you have time to pop into the Point to say hi to the Spiders :)
Posted by Veronique | March 8, 2007 8:55 AM
Well, it will either be cold up here or not. All depends the way the wind blows. Gotta love March! Thanks for the meme - I needed a blog post today.
Posted by Cara | March 8, 2007 8:53 AM
hey grumpy girl. if you are this cute when you are grumpy, wow i can just imagine when you are not :) hee hee... just kidding! i already know!!
instructional design & development...i don't even know what that is!! i am sending you a list of MUST DO nyc items. MUST.DO. that is all. :)
Posted by carolyn | March 8, 2007 8:20 AM
i would kill for 70 and breezy! actually, i'd settle for temps in the 50s. i love wearing all my handknits at once when i go outside, but it starts to get tiresome after a while.
have fun in nyc (i wish i had yarn store suggestions for you, but despite being so close, i haven't done much yarn shopping there [jersey's a bit cheaper!])!
Posted by kim | March 8, 2007 8:18 AM
Sorry to hear you are a grumpy schmoo. :(
I hope things turn around for you soon.
Go on vacation! Have lots and lots of fun, eat good food, and shop shop shop!

Ahhhh March in NYC. I chaperoned a trip of hs students--15 15-18 y.o.'s, me and three other adults for a week in 2003. It was a blast! Of arctic air. 14 degree windchill. Dress in layers, making sure at least one of them is windproof. Dude, it was cold. But so so fun. Really. Have a good, yarn-laden time (those shops are sewwwww small.)
Posted by Rachel | March 8, 2007 8:09 AM
Nothing more beautiful that Athens in the springtime. Enjoy it!
Go to NY and have a blow out. Hit Purl for sure and treat yourself to a fabulous meal at 'Le Pain Quotidien'--not expensive and amazing.
I'll be there this weekend taking my kids to see their dad, who'll be taking them to a certain Hall of Fame induction...;)

Don't you hate it when you have a bad week? Well, it is almost over so hang in there. Your trip to NY sounds fun, enjoy yourself.
Posted by Tina | March 8, 2007 5:54 AM
Sorry to hear that you are having a bad week. Do you like the Scissor Sisters? The song "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" is a total picker-upper and always pulls me out of a slump!
Your meme brought joy to my reeeeally boring afternoon at work, and I was surprised to see that you are studying in the same field I want to go into when I come home. Duh, how did I miss that?
Hope the trip to NY works out for you!!
