Moving to Montana soon....
...Gonna be a dental floss tycoon...
Not really. But dude. My allergies are SO. BAD. right now. My doctor yesterday jokingly recommended moving somewhere else to get away from the allergy-inducing climate, and I was seriously considering it for a second. I was convinced that I had bronchitis, or walking pnuemonia, or some horrible whooping cough.
But no. I have Georgia allergies. Ick. Blah blah blah. I'm whining, I know. But I'm tired of feeling SICK! I want to feel energetic and healthy and bright eyed and bushy tailed.
Another reason to become a dental floss tycoon...
my graduate program? GOT. CANCELED. No, really. They sent me an email last night. Sorry, not enough students, your program got canceled. Sorry that you bought a new laptop, and textbooks, and took the GRE and REARRANGED your life, because we canceled your program.
Ahem.
Yeah. Today was supposed to be orientation.
I was actually accepted into two programs, and the other program is still exciting and interesting to me, so I'm working on getting my application reconsidered since I already told them no.
But, I may not be going to graduate school this fall.
I'm flabbergasted. and dumbfounded.
I promise I'll post another entry soon. Meanwhile, here are some random bits of happy.

Cold asparagus salad, from D and J's wedding. Yum.

Bella and her favorite chipmunk toy.

Jacob at PBR Prom. Cute.
Thank goodness for happy things.

Love the Zappa reference! That's all it takes, I'm adding you to my bloglines! :) (I would've anyway)

Hi. I remember when Jacob wore that outfit....but it was for real...it was his formal wear for New Years Eve a few years ago. HAHA

I don't have words for the amount of ass that sucks. I'm so hoping it works out with the other program.
Posted by terby | August 17, 2006 9:21 PM
Wow. Just wow. I can understand cancelling a class, but I've never heard of cancelling a program!
Good luck with the other program, and if it doesn't work out, at least you have some extra time and $ to spend in the meantime on the good stuff (the schmoos, the Pants, the yarn)!
Posted by Sarah | August 17, 2006 3:41 PM
What?! They cancelled your program?! Is that even allowed? Now, I don't want to use the word "fair" because I feel like a child throwing that word around, but it's not fair.
Posted by Stacey | August 17, 2006 2:29 PM
Are you kidding?? I cannot believe they canceled your program. I hope you can get the second one at least. And, allergies SUCK!!
Posted by Michelle | August 17, 2006 2:19 PM
I can't believe those fucker cancelled the program!
But the good things of late have been SOOO good! The wedding...the prom...Toppers...
Posted by Anne Marie | August 17, 2006 1:42 PM
Carrie, that is incredible! And it totally bites! But, I guess something in the cosmos is at work...I'm sure the wonderful thing that is meant to happen for this suckiness will soon come your way. Fun pics!
And Monkey and I traveled through Athens this past weekend and are now smitten with it! =)

OMG! That sucks ass! Good luck with the second program. That is so ridiculous, to just cancel a program like that. Good luck!!!
also -- I also have redonkulous Georgia allergies. Good lord what is the deal with pollen. Jeezum Christo.

question:
is a PBR prom a pabst blue ribbon prom?
and if so: why is jacob drinking a coors.
sorry about the grad school droppage. that's crazy. hopefully you can get back into the other one. but if not, you've got another year to save money/pay bills/BUY YARN. so it's not all bad. :)
smooches!

I can send you vicoden in an unmarked envelope if you wish, to get through this mf-ing horror show. Can they really do that? So sorry students, disperse and talk amongst yourselves...Take care of yourself.
Posted by Silvia | August 16, 2006 11:32 PM
Dude, you're really taking it in stride. Good luck with the other program!
Posted by J Strizzy | August 16, 2006 11:00 PM
Oh man, that grad school stuff stinks! The one good thing is that you hadn't started already when they cancelled. Hope it all works out and you feel better!
Posted by sarah b. | August 16, 2006 7:28 PM
that sucks and you are such a trooper BUT more than likely what happened is some really SUCKY people waited until the last minute to cancel themselves - we have that happen with dental students - 80 slots - orientation day comes and several don't show up. Now they generally have people on a wait list who usually fill the slots but then they end up having to play catch-up because someone else was RUDE!!! You are taking it so well - and you know this will certainly make planning the big EVENT so much easier!! BUT you're young - you got plenty of time for grad school!
Posted by robin | August 16, 2006 6:57 PM
How can they do that?! That is absolute INSANITY... i recommend going shopping to beat the blues...(tequila helps too) :)

I'm STUNNED. And EMBARRASSED (but unfortunately not all that surprised) that my alma mater would do such a thing.
Yuckyuckyuck.
Fingers crossed for the second program.
Posted by Monica | August 16, 2006 2:02 PM
Gah! That's so wrong! Sorry about the grad program. Hopefully the other one will work out and you can take back the books and all. I have never heard of such a crazy thing.
Posted by elise | August 16, 2006 1:59 PM
wow, that totally sucks! the last minute notification is a little rude, too. sorry, dude.
Posted by malia | August 16, 2006 1:37 PM
That totally sucks about the grad program. I'll be sending positive thoughts from CA (where allergies are also bad--yick) all the way to GA. Hang in there. (And maybe you can think of this as an excuse to spend more time knitting.)
Posted by Brenda | August 16, 2006 12:54 PM
Unfortunately, I know your pain far to well. Ohio State University cancelled 4 of the departments that I kept transferring to to get my Masters while I was there. I would transfer to a new department and it would close in a quarter or two. So, I totally understand.
Good luck, and worse comes to worse look at a different university. I wish I had back then and it would have saved so many headaches and a lot of money.

This is my first time posting, and I just have to say that I'm so sorry to hear about your defunct program! I can't even imagine how frustrating it must be to have such majoy plans changed on you at the last minute.
Hopefully, there's a karmically good reason lurking behind it - for a such a positive person as you, there must be.
Posted by Maureen | August 16, 2006 12:21 PM
I'm so sorry they cancelled your program! Doing it over email seems lame - if it was due to too few students the department should have made phone calls to explain - especially since it was so last minute.
Sorry again - I hope you figure something out that works for you!
Posted by Macoco | August 16, 2006 11:38 AM
What in the hell? That is insane. No, it's NUTZ with a Z. I can't believe an entire graduate progam was CANCELLED and you were given notice a NIGHT BEFORE ORIENTATION.
OK, I'm done with the all-caps thing.
Well...if we put on our positive thinking helmets for a second, let's assume that you are in fact meant to go to the other program, and it will be oh so much better for you.
And I hope you feel better. By the way, I have a Neti Pot if you want to try one out (I cleaned it!!). I recommend them thoroughly. xoxo
Posted by MJ | August 16, 2006 10:53 AM
That SUCKS! Surely the second program will take you; maybe it'll turn out to be a blessing in disguise?
Posted by kelly | August 16, 2006 10:09 AM
that really sucks about your grad program! It seems like they should have at the very least given you some sort of indication that this MIGHT happen before it actually happened. argh! I hope you work things out with that other program...
Posted by maya | August 16, 2006 10:08 AM
Oh no, I'm so sorry they cancelled the whole program! I hope the other option works out for you.
My allergies were so bad when we lived in MD it was insane.
Posted by Kim | August 16, 2006 9:42 AM
so sorry to hear about school. i would hope that the university's other program would take you out of mere courtesy for this major inconvenience and last minute notice if nothing else. good luck!
Posted by amanda | August 16, 2006 9:35 AM
that is INSANE! WtF? I'm sooo sorry about the graduate program!!! :( Mayb it will work out with the ther school... if not there is always next fall? (or the spring? Can you do that?)
and I cannot BELIEVE all that is just allergies. SHIT! poor thing!!!
Keep focusing on the happy. You have tons of it!!!
Posted by Lara | August 16, 2006 7:46 AM
I'm so sorry about the graduate school snafu -- boy, that really sucks. And being sick on top of it.
But I really admire that you can enjoy the happy things in your life when the universe is f-ing with you!
And thank you for the Frank Zappa reference. :-)
Posted by Wendy | August 16, 2006 6:48 AM
Just adding my sympathy. Cancelling at SUCH short notice, shocking.
Good luck with the back up. We are all rooting for ya.
All the best,
Dawn

Universities attempt to pull that $hit all the time--so sorry it hit you in the process. Maybe you can come to Atlanta where there are 1.) more universities = more programs to choose from and 2.) more fun bars in which to sing? So sorry--may Jacob and a bottle (or more) of wine take the edge off of disappointment and allergies.
Posted by brandy | August 15, 2006 11:41 PM
and they had NO IDEA that there were so few people until the DAY before orientation? that's shockingly slipshod. i think if you explain the circumstances to the other program, perhaps they can expedite the process? so, so sorry.
Posted by carrie m | August 15, 2006 11:23 PM
Still raging about this in sympathy. All the girls at Main Street were really mad for you too! I really hope the other program lets you in--screw those jerks up the hill!
Posted by Anita | August 15, 2006 10:24 PM
Oh, hon, that sucks. It's totally typical of this school to not tell you until the last possible second, isn't it? I promise right now that I'm going to quit bitching about all the six-hours-notice meetings and deadlines I get sent, because this is so much worse. Shitheads. I'm sending you good vibes for the fallback programme. And let's go out sometime soon.
Posted by jodi | August 15, 2006 9:43 PM
Oh my god... that's absurd. I'm so sorry!
Posted by Mandy | August 15, 2006 9:23 PM
What crap! Good luck with the other program. Things happen for a reason, blah, blah, blah :)
Posted by Vicki | August 15, 2006 9:22 PM
That's terrible they cancelled your program right before orientation. Grad school is difficult as it is & they just made it a bigger PITA. I hope the other program works out for you, though.
Posted by knit chick | August 15, 2006 9:11 PM
Your program got cancelled? Crazy! Good luck wth the other program and I hope you feel better.
Posted by Jenny | August 15, 2006 9:01 PM
Delurking to add my sympathy. That is awful that your program was cancelled the day before orientation. And to do it by email is just rude! I started grad school last fall -- it takes a lot of effort and commitment to apply and prepare to go back to school. I can't even imagine how upset and disappointed I'd be!
Posted by Michelle | August 15, 2006 7:50 PM
You are seriously the most unlucky person ever. I mean, who does that happen to? Dumbfounded or not, you seem to be taking it better than I would... and that's a really cute picture of Bella by the way!
Posted by Katie | August 15, 2006 7:22 PM
Dude! they cancelled school! that is so not right. You can make this work for you though. I KNOW IT!
Posted by suzanne | August 15, 2006 5:56 PM
WHAT??????!!!!!!?????????
Posted by Jenny | August 15, 2006 5:39 PM
omg I cant believe that happened! who cancels a graduate program?!
I hope the other one works out and that you feel better soon
Posted by yahaira | August 15, 2006 5:26 PM
I thought moving to a dry deserty place like L.A. would get rid of my GA allergies but they got like a sucktillion times worse. Now that I'm back in GA, I feel way better.
Who knows, maybe everything happens for a reason and your program is cancelled so you can have time to concentrate on getting married? Ok, maybe I'm reaching.
Posted by jenifleur | August 15, 2006 5:25 PM
Man! Major suckage. I hope it works out better, though.
And if your allergies really are that bad, you might consider moving. Or get a neti pot. Norma of knitting fame swears by them. A coworker says he hasn't had a sinus infection since he started using one. I have yet to work up the guts to wash the inside of my nose using a special pot, but I'm getting close. Dratted sinuses.
Posted by Carrie | August 15, 2006 5:06 PM
I can't believe they canceled the whole PROGRAM! And with what, like two weeks before school starts? What the hey?! I'm with Lala--total ghetto.
Posted by Michelle | August 15, 2006 5:03 PM
wow, i think you have every right to be whiny for a while. i can't imagine finding out that my program was cancelled (and via email?!). it is good you have a positive outlook. i hope everything works out in the end, and it turns out there is another great opportunity around the corner
Posted by kim | August 15, 2006 4:51 PM
Good grief, I didn't know canceling an entire program was possible. Much less the night before orientation. Crazy. I'm sorry to hear about the disappointment. I think this is a sign you and Anne Marie should start your own local-access TV show. Or internet TV show. I see crafts and science experiments galore!
Posted by courtney | August 15, 2006 4:45 PM
Ditto-ditto. That is, I'm sorry to hear about the grad school snafu, and the bothersome allergies, to boot. However, I'm more shocked (read *amazed*) by your always so-charming positive outlook on everything, which is one of the reasons I always look forward to your blogposts. Truly, even when life throws you some loops, you seem to stay cheerful, strong, optimistic, and so I (and many others, I'm sure) try to use you as an example. Seriously, so many of us whine that it is truly refreshing to find someone who so rarely does. ("Not that there ain't nothing wrong with a good ol' rant & bitch-fest now and again!")
Good luck with working everything out--!
Posted by kodachrome | August 15, 2006 4:38 PM
I'm sorry to hear your program was cancelled. You know, this could be a good thing though because you were about to have A LOT on your plate. Think about the extra time you have to focus on the wedding and being a newlywed. When life gives you lemons.... ;) I think getting my mac back today is putting me an extra "see-the-silver-lining-mood".
Posted by erika | August 15, 2006 4:25 PM
WTF? that is so messed up. i hope your allergies get better at least!
Posted by melissa | August 15, 2006 4:18 PM
DUDE! Cancelled. That's harsh. At least it's not personal. But still...Best laid plans and all.
I too think it's going to be a blessing in disguise. This is obviously not what you were meant to be doing, exactly. At least not through that path. So here's hoping that the State of Georgia and it's higher ed people get a clue.
Posted by Rachel | August 15, 2006 4:17 PM
One of my allergist told me that I'm in the top 10% of the worst allergy suffers in the country. At least I'm above average in something!!But right now they are so under control I can hardly believe it. Let me know if you want to hear more...
Posted by Jennifer Coomer | August 15, 2006 4:15 PM
Oh. My. That is such crap that your program was cancelled! That's got to be a shock. I hope that the alternate program will work out even better than this one would have. Wow...
Posted by natalie | August 15, 2006 4:14 PM
I've heard of cancelled classes, but an entire program? I'm sorry to hear it.
Posted by Gina | August 15, 2006 4:11 PM
That is such crap! As someone who makes her living in higher ed, sometimes I just have to shake my head.
And to have bad allergies on top of it all... yuck-o.
Thank goodness indeed for happy things!! The Pants appears to be very serious about his silver bullet. (yikes. that did not mean to sound sexual... although I'm sure he's very serious about that, too)
Posted by allison | August 15, 2006 4:09 PM
Aw, man. Suckage! At least you do have some wonderful things to think about. You have a great attitude!
Love the pic of Pants, he is quite the dude in that hat.
Posted by Sandy | August 15, 2006 4:08 PM
Wow. I'm glad that you're feeling positive enough to put up happy pictures because if I were you, I'd be solely PISSED. What if other students had moved to the area to do their degree? Really, that's insane.
Posted by Jenna | August 15, 2006 4:05 PM
oh my god... how incredibly frustrating!! you go through ALL OF THAT WORK and then THEY bail on you? isn't it supposed to be the other way around. i'm just flabbergasted. you poor thing.
well, at least you have your schmoos :)
Posted by gleek | August 15, 2006 4:04 PM
I can't believe your program got cancelled! Can they do that?
Posted by Leslie | August 15, 2006 4:04 PM
That is so unfair. I hope the second program works out.
As far as allergies go... moving gives you a reprieve, but somehow the body can develop new allergies. Go figure! Love the Zappa reference -- one of my favorites!
Posted by Becky | August 15, 2006 4:00 PM
Wow, can they do that? That's terrible and how shocking to read it in a letter! I'm so sorry. I really hope everything with the other program works out!
Posted by Kelly | August 15, 2006 3:47 PM
That's so ghetto. They cancelled your whole program? I've never heard of such a thing! Dude.
Posted by lala | August 15, 2006 3:47 PM
they couldn't have figured that out earlier? goobers.
i'm sorry about the weirdness.
Posted by karen | August 15, 2006 3:46 PM
Wow, that is ridiculous! I am so sorry but I bet it will work out with the other one and you'll be joining me in the complaining-about-grad-school camp in no time.
Posted by Lauren | August 15, 2006 3:43 PM
Oh for crap's sake, they just up and cancelled it? Just a "Sorry, dude, no more program!" I hope it all magically works out!
Posted by Jenn | August 15, 2006 3:42 PM
Oh HONEY! That sucks!!! I hope it all works out with the other program - and maybe, just maybe this will end up being a blessing in disguise.
And good luck with the allergies - I've been suffering a bit myself.
Posted by Cara | August 15, 2006 3:41 PM
I cannot believe that they sent you an email...not even a phone call? That is so unbelievably rude and classless. I've never heard of such a thing.
Hope it all works out with the second program since it would suck to be all revved up for Grad school and no where to go!
