Yay.
Yay for long weekends, especially long weekends that are scheduled right after the birth of a new nephew. I needed to recover (and I imagine that my sister and her husband did too. Hee). Jacob and I went to Mississippi to visit his grandparents, and we got in lots of relaxation, fishing, and eating.
Here's some broccoli from his grandparents' garden:

It was delicious.
One night, we had a vegetable feast for dinner, and the majority of the veggies came from their garden. New potatoes, English peas, broccoli, lima beans. yumyumyum.
I got to fish in the catfish pond where Jacob fished when he was little - it was really cool. He caught a catfish, and I did too, but it got away. I'd never actually seen a catfish in real life before! Later, I caught a bass and a brim. I am a fisherwoman.
I also did a lot of knitting. I actually finished Green Gable, but it's not blocked yet, so here's a progress picture for you:

Green Gable.
I did a few extra rows of the lace pattern (accidentally) but I think it works. It definitely needs a good blocking, but I think I'm going to really like the finished product.
Other things that happened this weekend:
1. During his weekly haircutting session, Jacob accidentally shaved a hole into the back of his head. Eight years of hair cutting, people, and this is the first time it's ever happened. I admit that I laughed uncontrollably for a little while before empathizing.

Oops.
Luckily, the Pants has a handsome face and normal shaped head, so he just shaved his head. And he still looks cute.

He's not happy about it.
2. I took some generic Pepto-Bismol before I went to sleep on Saturday night (hello, fried Mississippi country food) and I woke up with a BLACK TONGUE. I am not kidding. Click if you want to see part of my gross black tongue.
I immediately thought I was dying of The Black Tongue. I was wrong, (as Jacob and HEJ assured me). Apparently, this can be a side effect of Pepto-Bismol. We even checked the bottle and it said: "This beneficial medicine may cause a darkening of the tongue." Harumph. Thus, I am writing about my Black Tongue to increase awareness of this harmless yet bizarrely disturbing side effect of Pepto-Bismol. Ew.
And that was my weekend. I'm glad to be home, glad to see my doggy schmoos, and glad that tonight I'm going to finally watch the finales of Lost and American Idol on Tivo. Yay.

My ex-bf used to make me cut his hair using the clippers and I did the same thing to his head -- except it was at the VERY top and MUCH smaller. Even though he is 6'4 he insisted that everyone would see it and he would be mortified.
He would not let me just shave his head. Instead, I had to get up early every day for 2 weeks to apply a combination of brown eyeshadow and mascara to the bald spot. It actually worked very well.

Ooh, fresh garden veggies! I love spring food. Things where you were are a little ahead of our garden. I can't wait!

I think he is HOT in that shaved head. HE John is sportin' the same do.
I didn't think of Pepto doing it. Carrie's brain > HEJ's brain.

Love the haircut! I actually did that to my son once, on the side of his head! There's nothing people want to hear less than "oops" when you're cutting their hair!!

My son is so handsome, even when he is bald!

I have had the dreaded back tongue. Noticed it brushing my teeth in the am - looked in the sink and thought "I haven't been eating Oreos what is happening?!?" Wound up going to the Dr cuz it freaked me out! I got it from taking antibiotics for back to back salmonella and ear infection, that was not a fun month!

For the record, ahem, Pepto can also cause black poo. Just so you know. Don't be alarmed.

The black tongue would have freaked me out, too! Thanks for raising awareness. I've never used Pepto Bismol but now, in case I do, I know what to expect.
That's hysterical about the head shaving. My husband has been cutting his own hair with the clippers for at least 12 years, if not longer, and he makes that same mistake every so often.
Also, congratulations on the new little family member! You are an aunt! Best wishes to your sister and her new family. :D

Thanks for that info about the black tongue. I would have never guessed. Tell The Pants he looks just fine. It will grow back in two weeks.

i'm confused -- how does jacob cut his own hair? how did this happen? i'm glad he can pull of a shaved head -- i'd look like gorbachev.

I second Kathy's statement - your tongue is not the only thing that Pepto will turn black! Beware!

Jacob's head...SO FUNNY!
us: FUNNY
him: NOT FUNNY
I'm glad that your tongue is back to normal. I, too, would have freaked out.
Green gables looks like it fits you perfectly. I can't wait to see the projecto finito!

Of COURSE I clicked the photo. Yee-haw! It is a durn good thing you guys are on the new-baby-in-the-family high, because a newly black body part and shaved hunk-o-hair on the wrong day can mean veeeery grumpy people!

I KNEW I sensed a disturbance in the Forcefield over Mississippi. Hot enough for ya? We heated the air up special just cuz we knew you were comin'.
I. love. to. fish. I had a fishing license waaaaayyyy before I had a driver's license. And catfish are not pretty, but they sure do taste good. The bream are more fun to catch, though, cuz it's harder for them to poke holes in your hand. Owwiiieeee! Plus they're cute with their red bellies.

My husband has also done that with a shaver when he forgets to put on the attachments.. only he usually starts in the front of his head, so its even sillier.

Jacob looks great, tell him not to worry, besides it will grow like mad with all this southern heat!
Sorry about the black tongue, but it could have been worse...black face, black boob or worse yet black you know where! eeekkkkkkk
note to self, DO NOT NO MATTER HOW BAD YOU FEEL TAKE PEPTO PRIOR TO WEDDING!!!!!
Posted by Betsy | May 30, 2006 1:36 PM
Brady's head looks normal sized, but I'm sure your sister would disagree.
I can't believe that the pants cuts his own head when he's got you to help - okay kidding...talk about stress on a relationship.

When I clicked on your Black-Tongue-Awareness picture, my mother happened to look over and said "Good grief! What are you reading about?"

Oh my gosh, I got the Pepto Black Tongue one time too! And you're right, it was very scary. Way to go for increasing awareness, you'll save many an unnecessary panic attack.

I cracked up over The Pants' picture! If only we dames could solve our bad haircut issues so simply! And great minds think alike - I've chosen the same colour for my Gable. It's not working for me though - I may try my hand at dying it! And congrats on becoming Auntie Schmoo!

Pepto can also cause black poops. It's true. (And I was totally freaked about internal bleeding when my doctor told me that.) I had no idea it would turn your tongue black, though. Scary.
