Rainy Weekend

This weekend was Jacob's grandfather's 70th birthday. To celebrate, we drove to Tunica, Mississippi for some family time. If you've never been to Tunica, here's what you're missing: pastures and casinos. That is all. No grocery stores, or drugstores, or Blockbuster Videos. Just pastures, and casinos, and some ducks sitting in the swampier pastures. We had lots of fun hanging out with the fam of the Pants, although I seriously feel like I smoked an entire pack of cigarettes after being in the casino all weekend, and for an ex-smoker, that's an extra nasty feeling.

This casino trip taught me the joys of the penny slot machine. You can play for hours and not really spend much money - that is *totally* my kind of gambling. Although it would be nice to win a big old jackpot, I was really there for the company. And the free drinks.

Here are Jacob's parents at the birthday dinner. I didn't realize my flash was on, so my finger obscured it a little and thus we have the scary haunted house lighting in this picture:

annetteandtommy.jpg
Tommy and Annette, in spoooooky lighting.

That picture was right before Annette and her sisters went to play the Elvis slot machine. Good times, fer real.

I wasn't allowed to take pictures in the casino, although I *really* wanted to take some pictures of the high rollers over at the Horseshoe. I also didn't want to get my arms broken, so I kept my camera in my bag. However, I was allowed to take pictures of my car knitting:

hourglasssleeve.jpg
Sleeve One, Hourglass Sweater.

The body of the hourglass is finished, all I have left are the sleeves and the yoke. This is the first sleeve, and you maybe can see by the picture that I'm using the Magic Loop method on one short Denise needle. It worked, too.

hemmededge.jpg
This is what the edge of my sleeve will look like once I hem it.

Um, how cool are these turned under edge thingies??? I saw one for the first time on HEJ's Nothin' But A T-Shirt, and thought it looked so crisp, but I didn't realize that it was pretty easy to do. I worked the edge around half the body last night and I kept stopping to admire the edge. SO. FUN.

The beginnings of a tube.

And here's my little Tubey, just now starting out. She's a wee schmoo right now. Sorry for the blurriness (I was in the car, in the rain, using my headlamp). That color is Dusty Teal. And I love.

I switched back and forth between these two projects the whole weekend. Getting close to finishing the Hourglass...and really wanting my Tubey** before it warms up too much. I guess I have a few months before that happens!

**(Thanks for all the happy comments on Tubey Number One! As far as Cat's Tubey goes, I really didn't modify the pattern at all. I blocked the sleeves out so the bell shape would really stand out. I used a needle two sizes up to bind off the body and the sleeves because I'm an extremely tight bind-er-off-er. For my own, I may go about an inch longer on the middle shrug section - the part that goes around your back - because hers was just a little bit tight on me. tubeytubeytubey. yay.)

wwwOoooOOoo...that picture IS scary...it's the ghost of Elvis!

Nice job on Cathy's Tubey sweater...I think I need one of those!

I have never seen that turn under hem thing...how cool is that?!

And I love that dusty teal color. Is your tubey going to be a solid color like your sisters or are you going to change it up a bit?

Viva car knitting! Yours looks fab, my dear.

P.S. Too bad about the no camera in the casino deal. I would have LOVED to see a photo of you knitting by the Elvis slot machine.

wow - that hem finish is so smooooooth!! And just how did you do on the GRE???? You really should brag about it at least somewhat as we're all expecting you to ace it anyway, 'specially the verbal part 'cause you are the queen of verbalese!!
Rob

My Hourglass is the same color... I am still knitting away on the sleeves.

Awesome color on the Hourglass sweater. What yarn are you using? I know I say this about everything, but that sweater really has been on my things to knit list for a while, and I just got the book this winter, so I think I might finally be ready for my first sweater. Though, I also love the Tubey you made for your sister, so I'm torn now.

Wow, you've got like the A-list of all knitbloggers commenting on your post. Very cool. Although, totally not surprised, I *heart* your site. Wanted to know what yarn you are using for your hourglass sweater? The cash iroha looked gorgeous, but a bit out of the 'ole price range...

hey! Since you're on a Tubey roll....wanna make ME one ;) hee!

I might try Tubey for the knitting Olympics. I'll swatch some yarns for my training.
I love the color of yours, so pretty.

What fun to take a family Road Trip! I have another one coming up this year down to the Atlanta area - they don't have any casinos (I too love the penny slots!) but they do have a HUGE NASCAR rink/field/oooh, Track! out in the middle-of-nowhere.

If I could drag the olde ones out with me, we'd be sittin' in the sun drinkin' some Bud and gettin' sunburn noses...

SNORT!

Ooooh, I love the color for your dusty teal Tubey. Which yarn are you using?

I swear everyone on the dang internet is knitting at lightening speed! I'm so behind the times. I bought yarn to make my own Tubey (that's right I broke the yarn diet). I think your sis's looks awesome.

Hi, coming out of lurkdom. First, congrats on quitting smoking, and marathon-ing! I'm coming up on my 4 year anniversary of no smoking on 2/13.

I'm also a tight-er bind-er off-er. Have you tried the Icelandic cast off? Knit two stitches together, put the stitch you just made back on the left needle and knit it together with the next stitch, repeat to end.

It's now my favorite cast off method. :-)

You're really rockin' those circular knits. They're so nice for things like car trips since you can just keep going and going.

Did the people in the Casinos in MS have the little credit cards things they could plug right into the machines? When I went to play the slots in West Virginia one time, all these people had cards on little sproingy strings that attached to their shirts, so they all looked like they were directly connected to the machine. It freaked me out.

Ex smoker! Maybe I need to learn some tricks from you on that one. Love the Hourglass sweater I need to make mine soon. And the tubey! I have a question for you on your camera. Could you e-mail me? I cannot find a link for your e-mail! Thanks so much!

you are an ex-smoker!!!! SO. PROUD.

Also. Tell people that you did great on the GRE!

Also also. Jacob looks like his dad. Am I making that up?

Ooh, you know, I like to hem as I go, using my "no sew hem" technique. I find grafting it afterwards a bit of a chore.

It looks great, though, can't wait ot see her all done.

Ooh, another Tubey! I'm living vicariously because I can't let myself start any more projects right now, but it's on my list! (Speaking of which, so is the Hourglass sweater, in yummy Brooks Farm yarn that has been taunting me since Rhinebeck ...) Must finish up Kepler!!

Thanks for the word up on using Denise's for magic loop. I have recently been enamoured of this technique, but was thinking (assuming, tsk tsk) that the Denise cord would not be flexible enough. This opens up a world of flexibility for me...while I *heart* my Addi's, sometimes the Denise's are really the ticket!

BTW - the hemmed edge is beeeauuuuutiful.

How helpful to have a twinsie fit model...I may have to remember that trick because nothing ever fits me in the shoulders.

And re: Tunica... Not even a Subway? I thought those were mandatory in every town.

darn it I've been stash busting and now I want a tubey. After the cowl I'm so torn! leaf lace or tubey or even cutaway! carrieoke! you are a temptress by virtue of your lovely knits!!!

arrrgh! ;)

I love the hemmed edge! I made the NBaT and the Hourglass, and loved the edge both times. Clean, clean, clean. Love it.

Thanks to your Tubey, I've printed out the pattern and discovered I already have stash yarn for it! Yay, Tubey! Yay, oversized stashes! It will have to wait for the Olympics to end, though, right now I'm in serious training. But I loved your sweater!
