what can I get for ten dollar?
It's been a good week.
Things I accomplished:
1. Did some laundry.
2. Ran 2 miles, twice. (That would be twice, two miles each.)
(And while we're talking about running, lemme tell ya something - running is HARD. I was feeling all cool, ya know, because I ran four miles, and I thought I was a True Runner Now and then I tried to run last Saturday after wearing heels all day Friday, and it HURT LIKE HELL. As in, it hurt so bad that my wimpy butt had to turn around and go home.
I called my sister in tears .... and she told me that it sounded like shin splints. This is what you do with shin splints:

You ice them.
The left shin got Ore-Ida fries, the right shin got a bag of ice cubes.
So, on that particular night, I was ready to quit training for my half-marathon, never run again, and return to my training for the Knitting-While-Watching-Law-and-Order marathon. But my sister and HEJ and AM and Jacob let me vent and then quietly encouraged me to keep on going. And Cathy brought me some cool socks. So, I waited a few days and tried again. It still hurts, a little, but I'm taking walk breaks and not overdoing it. I'm still aiming for the half marathon. )
3. Reworked one sleeve for my Cutaway sweater. I was about halfway through my first sleeve when I realized that I wanted something a little funkier for my cutaway sleeves. So, I enlisted some help (Jodi) with the math and some other help (Anne Marie) with computing the math and I got this:

It's a bell sleeve.
Now, I'm not completely sure how it will looked when it's totally done and attached, but I'm pleased so far. I'm up to the sleeve cap shaping now, and I think it's going to work. Hooray.
4. Watched the first episode of new Lost season. Note: I didn't watch this last season, so I had NO IDEA what was going on. Still liked it.
-------------------------------------
So, I started this entry on Friday, and now it's Sunday, and dude. I JUST RAN FIVE MILES. I'm so happy! I can DO it! I'm the king of the world! Wheee!
In other news, I rented the first two DVDs of Lost, Season One, and I'm loving it. Made me a little nervous about flying anytime soon.
This weekend I also made two purses and read a kick ass book. More on that later. Right now, I have to ice my shins and watch more Lost.
Whee. Five. Miles.

Oh do I remember shin splints...you did good though. Take it easy!

You ROCK! Hey, I struggled with those splints SO much - the only things that helped were stretches, every day, ibuprofen (2 before run, 3 every four hours afterward), and the biggest thing - cold water after the run. On long runs I was lucky, I would just walk out into the Pacific, since we ended at Golden Gate park. For my own runs, I'd pour the bath about 8 inches of cold water and sit in it. It's weird, it's AWFUL to get into, and then once you're in, you can just kind of hang out, reading, for about 20 minutes. The sooner after the run the better - it's the only way I made it to the marathon. Oh, I hate shin splints. Make sure you're wearing the right shoes for your feet, too, okay? I'm sure you've already done that....
Yay you!!

Good for you with the running- a better woman than me! I have to get back to the gym or Casey is going to pull my membership on me (and he would be justified...)! You are inspiring me!
Everyone has a lot of good advice on the shin splint thing- they can be tough...
Take care of yourself, I like the massage advice the best. ;)

I'd LOVE to be able to run, but I get sore hip joints and the shin pain too, and I'm a bit worried about permanent damage. So.... I do body pump, combat, and yoga instead. Yay! But I really would love the convenience of being able to just throw on the runners and go for it. AM going to go to that Athletes' Foot shop where they make you walk on a special machine which tells you what running shoes you need. Coool. Right after I get the money for it *:-)

Hi, congratulations on the running, I could never do it! Back when I was trying, though, my friend in the army taught me this exercise to do to guard against shin splints and it really worked well for me. It requires another person. You sit down legs straight out and together, and they hold your feet (first on the bottom) and you push towards them for a count of one or two and then let go, and do that a few times... then the other person holds the top part of your foot and you try to pull your feet back towards you for counts of one and two, using the muscle on the top of your shin... I think this is to do before running, like as a warmup... I hope it can work for you!

Way to go, Carrie. I need to get my ass in gear and run too.
I love Lost too--I watched it over last season, but it would be better to watch it on DVD--no waiting between weeks and cliffhangers!
Take care~

By the way - I BOUGHT "Lost" at Costco I love it so much. My husband is not loving it as much as I do. It is totally addicting. Gotta look for clues in each episode. Have fun!

Ok, I want to grow up to be you... (of course, I'm probably older than you are. 38 here!) Anyway, I've just started knitting. I made one scarf, and now I'm on to my first sweater. I need to work out and you are over there (where ever you are) kickin' butt running a dang 5 stinkin' miles!!!!! Shoot!
Good job - keep showing your work. I need the inspiration!

Way to go!! You're doing a great job! I've got faith in you to complete it still.. Besides, if you give up on your half marathon, that won't bode well for my full marathon endeavor!

Way to go on the running. I did a half marathon in 2003 as a new runner and BOY was I proud of myself. didn't run a lick for a while after that, though. However, I have some advice to add to the list for what to do with shin splints--leave or take as you wish. I had wicked ones a couple of weeks before the race and was terrified of not being able to run. So I splurged on a massage--just a half hour and told the guy "LEGS ONLY!" He said, "Tell me if it hurts." so I just gritted my teeth and bore it all. He dug down into those muscles and worked out all the knots. Hurt like hell and my legs felt like rubberbands for a few hours, but voila! No more splints! I think most new runners get them at some point. I was 25 lbs. heavier then and that'd be like running now with a toddler strapped to my back. No wonder I hurt myself.

I am so impressed that you ran 5 miles. I can barely run a block. I tried to run to the gate for a flight I thought I was gonna miss... I barely made it from B1 to B5 without DYING. So Sad.

Great job with the running!
I've noticed too that the heels really screw up the shins. And I was just getting used to the idea that I was a girl who wore heels!
By the way I love that color on the pictured sleeve.
Anyway, I know you can do the running. You are a determined little shit when you want to be!
XO!

5 miles! Woo hoo! Congrats! You're going to do great at the half marathon!

Way to go on the running! I am doing a breast cancer WALK. It's 5 miles and I am doing it with Weight Watchers. Of course the day before I am going to a wool festival in upstate NY. I will be pooped. Take care of yourself!

Weeeeee! on the five miles! Great work!
Running though the shin splinty pain can be rough. I had horrible ones last year while training for my marathon. Just an idea (though I know your sister will make sure you are all set) but check on your shoes. Shoes can cause a lot of aches and pains if you don't have the right ones! Otherwise, ice is good!

Congratulations on the running! I hate running, and I'm trying to start, so I find you a very encouraging role model. Keep it up!

I used to always get shin splints every time I walked/ran for more than a mile, but I heard that if you can stretch out your calf muscles, it helps. The easiest stretch is to stand on a step so your heels are out behind you (your toes/ball of your foot are the only part on the step) and then drop your heels down to stretch them out. It's really helped me.... hope it helps you!
Love the knitting, love the blog, baby!

You'll do great - pretty soon 5 miles will seem like nothing. Do what I do - think about knitting during the long runs - they always go faster that way.

Great job Carrie!

Good for you and the running! You're really inspiring me to take it up. I've always sucked at running, but had a desire to do it. Maybe I'll try!
:)

Congrats on the 5 miles. That's definitely an accomplishment. Shin splints come from running on concrete or other hard surfaces. If you can, trying running in the grass or on a track.

Knitting-while-watching-Law & Order marathon... hee hee, I'd be all over that one!

I rented the first two discs of Lost this weekend, too! And I don't feel guilty at all about watching all 8 episodes in a row. I think I might be hooked.

Amazing!!!!!!!!!
5 miles........... with shin splints! Whoop whoop
Swtich up the ice packs though, some fruit is always a nice change. But on a serious note, my son was just at the ER with incredible pain too, they said shin splints, he fears stress fracture. Just be careful.......
Go Carrie!

I think that those fancy icepacks will cure ya right quick.
5 miles is SO far. You are almost half way there. See! You CAN do it! I'm so proud of you. This is a big deal. A very big deal. A big fat hairy deal.
PS Yay for Google pedometer.

Wow - 5 miles! I get winded just walking around the block! I'm training too - for the whole get up off your ass a bit more marathon! Ha!

Lost = SO.GOOD.
Congrats on your ass kicking 5 miles! That's awesome!
Never tried using frozen fries, but I know frozen peas DO make a good ice pack...they conform to whatever you are icing. Good stuff.
And the bell sleeves on Cutaway? YUM.

Way to go on the running. I'd be happy if I could even make a mile so five miles in one week is beyond words. With the support that you have, it sounds like there's no way that you can fail!
My oldest son and I are going to rent all of the Lost 1st season episodes and try to catch up. Its a pretty cool show what I've seen so far.

Keep at it Carrie! When I first started running, it hurt me for a week. After that, my body got used to it and it was a-okay! =) Can't wait to see your cutaway!

Hehehe! I'm training for that L&O Marathon too...the running thing, not so much!
Glad to hear that you're healing and running--keep it up, girl!

You Rock! And you are giving me renewed confidence that I too will overcome the PAIN and run again! As for Lost, we're about to become obsessed, too. We're TiVoing the 2nd season and renting the first. Hopefully we'll catch up before the 2nd season ends! Congrats again on the running! I know you must be super-proud of yourself!

I just started training to run (like really. beginner.) and I can't even imagine myself running five miles. You rock! But please don't push it too far... I'd hate to see you really hurt!

YAY FOR FIVE MILES! And I was feeling all high on myself because I made it to week 4 of my beginning runner's training. Hope the shin splints are better soon - don't overdue it too much. RICE is your friend.

Go you! Shin splints are the worst. I hope the Ore-Idas take care of matters.
The bell sleeve is fantastic. It's going to look great!
