Crazy
So, I went to the new Omni gym in town with my friend Leslie on Friday. It's all kinds of fancy...the women's locker room has leather couches, a flat panel TV and two massage chairs. And, all the machines have personal TVs on them. I discovered that when I'm attempting to run four miles, I prefer my music to watching TV, although I left it on for distraction. I also discovered that I HATE steam rooms (hello, you can't see! and it feels like you can't breathe!), but loves me a sauna. Then, after our invigorating workout, we walked to my car and discovered this:

My car done got broke into.
They dusted for prints (that's the black stuff underneath.)
Grr. In a turn of miraculous fate, I had my wallet and cell phone inside with me, but they took my purse, which contained my digital camera, my new glasses, and the right front side of my cutaway sweater. Yes, they stole my knitting. Harumph. Clearly my losses are minimal compared to what thousands of people are going through right now, so I'm still a lucky schmoo, but did they HAVE TO TAKE THE KNITTING? Jacob said : "At least it wasn't a finished object." How right he is.
So, really, it's not that bad. The cop who came was younger than me and so sweet and nice (I think Leslie liked him). When he was taking down what I had in the purse, he asked me to describe my glasses, and I said (kind of ashamedly): "Um, purple...hornrimmed...glasses." And he looked at me and said (in a southern accent), "That doesn't mean anything to me, are those weird glasses or something?" Hee hee hee.
After the cops came, we went over to HEJ's for some good times, and because she's a sweet schmoo, Jenny is letting me borrow her old digital camera indefinitely since mine is probably at a pawn shop by now. Thank you thank you thank you. (Jenny said when she got my message about the break-in, her first thought was "Oh my god, her credit cards, her money!" and her second thought was "Oh my god, HER KNITTING!" Hee hee. We knitters gotta have priorities.)
Here are some pictures of Bella and Chili, because they are adorable schmoos.

Here's Chili protecting our yard. She's a good schmoo.

Bella says: No pictures, please.
She's a scruffy little schmoo.
Okay. I just reprinted Cutaway and I'm off to re-cast on for the right front. I might have to buy a second set of Denise needles because the robbers got my size 5s and a cord... dang, I hate having a reason to buy knitting supplies. :) Have a great weekend!
P.S. Be sure to go give some love to Gnome G this weekend. She had a little scare with her doggy schmoo Casey, and we need to send them good vibes!

Oh no! I mean, the purse and glasses are horrible but the knitting?! Tragic!!
Yes, if you do leave your purse in the car, put it in the trunk... Gah, what a pain. :(

Bastards!! Stealing knitting is not to be condoned!! They should be caught and hung. No, castrated would be better. Yes, castrate for stolen knitting. We should make a good example of these horrible people. I feel for you losses! Sorry it happened, it's such an invasion of privacy. Damn, why the knitting??
Posted by kimberly | September 13, 2005 10:52 AM
Jerks. Like they're going to do anything with the knitting. I mean sure, the cam you could get money for, but used yarn? They should have just left that. Sorry babe!

Bummer about the car and knitting, but cute pics of the dogs. Looks like you love terriers.

How terrible! Broken windows and stolen objects just suck so hard. Especially that little tiny window on the back like yours. Sorry about the stolen knitting. People have no morals!
At least if you see anyone walking around Athens with a half-knitted sweater on you can nail them. Okay, sorry that was a bad and dumb joke. :)

you seem so calm about it! well done you, i would be so sad... it happened to us a little while ago and they didn't take anything but they let the fire extinguisher off in the car. aren't these people just delightful...?
wishing you lots of lucky things to make up for it...

I think there must be something in the weather. My apartment got broken into last week. Luckily, they didn't take any of my knitting, just my jewelry.
Posted by grace | September 12, 2005 4:26 PM
Oh, that stinks. I had my car window smashed and broken (the same window as yours- luckily, the cheapest to fix... considerate of them, yes?) and they took my parking meter change and the CD that was sitting there, which happened to be Free To Be You And Be. I hope they learned some lessons.
Sending good thoughts your way!

How crappy! :(
At least you are ok and had all your vital info on you and not in the car. Losing the knitting sucks though.
The pics of your schmoos are schmoo-licious!

As a witness I can testify to the fact that Carrie was a trooper about the whole thing (except the steam room, of course), AND the police officer was really nice and cute in a I'm 20 and really southern kind of way.
Posted by Leslie | September 12, 2005 1:18 PM
They took your KNITTING? Was it tucked away in a bag? If so, I would have loved to have seen their faces when they opened it.
So sorry about the breakin. That just sucks.
Posted by cari | September 12, 2005 12:32 PM
i'm so sorry that happened! do you have enough yarn to finish the sweater now? i'm so, so glad that you had your phone and wallet with you. and i'm not surprised that you are keeping a stiff upper lip!
Posted by carrie m | September 12, 2005 12:24 PM
they could have at least left your knitting. bastards.
p.s. bella has the best scruff. it's like a sweet halo of schmooness all around her.

I agree with MJ...you are taking this very well. It supa-sucks. Stealing is just mean. Maybe after they go thru your purse, they'll throw it somewhere and it'll be turned in to the police station. Hopefully.

Coming out of lurkdom :-)
So sorry to hear about your break-in. Your car insurance should cover your window, glasses, camera and even knitting under the comprehensive part of your policy. Check your deductible for that part of your coverage. Hopefully it's low or none!
Posted by Jackie | September 12, 2005 9:48 AM
Damn. That sucks. Replacing glasses, the window, what a pain in the ass. I'm glad you had your wallet though.
Posted by J Strizzy | September 12, 2005 9:40 AM
I can't believe no one saw them break into your car!! That parking lot is huge, you think someone whould have seen something. That sucks.
Posted by jenny | September 12, 2005 9:29 AM
I'm so sorry Carrie! I'd be lost in this world without my glasses, and your new ones were adorable. You do seem to be taking this quite well. The whole thing is horrible! xoxo

Break-ins are the worst. About a year ago, something similar happened to me. I park my car outside my condo, usually near the front door and under a street lamp. One night, I decided that I didn't want to bring both of my bags in when I was going the pack them back up the next morning, so I left the "goodie" bag containing my summertime reading in the car. I was working on a lace project and had left the knitting at home, too complicated for lunchtime. The next morning, I found a cinderblock sitting where I had left the bag. After working everything out with the police and insurance company, I have finally been able to laugh about it... they got away with a red bag, a copy of The Monkey Wrench Gang, and a hairbrush! What a steal!

OH how sucky! I'm glad you didn't have to lose your wallet, but your new GLASSES! KNITTING! Argh...hope you have the good car insurance that pays 100% for broken glass.
Posted by Silvia | September 11, 2005 11:52 PM
Oh, Carrie, so sorry to hear of your bad luck. And your adorable glasses?! And your knitting? So disappointing. I'm glad HEJ saved the day with the camera borrow so I can see your cute pups!
Posted by courtney | September 11, 2005 11:18 PM
Carrie, that sucks! Sorry about your camera, but mostly the knitting! And you know they probably just threw it away, too. Yucky.
Posted by Sarah | September 11, 2005 8:39 PM
Carrie, that sucks! I had my car thieved from twice in the years I lived in the city (Chicago~ as opposed to the burbs), and it's so frustrating and awful to discover the little things you love and pour effort into are gone. Boo. I hope the fingerprint dusting yields good finds...
And thanks so much for the schmoo love. Casey totally appreciates it and sends big schmoo kisses to Bella and Chili!!

H.
Oh how awful I'd be the most pissed about the glasses. I hope your insurance covers it. In the 1960's my mom had her knitting bag stolen from her car. She never leaves anything like a purse etc in her car to this day.

That sucks. When we go someplace, my husband rolls his eyes big-time because I won't leave my knitting in the car. "Who would steal something half-knitted?" Now I can show him.
And they got your Denise needles? Man, I'd be seriously pissed. Then I'd go shopping.
Actually, you can buy replacement Denise's from their website; you can get just the pieces you need instead of buying a whole new set. Unless you want a whole new set.

OMG - that is awful!! Do you have enough yarn left for the sweater - or do you need us to look for the same dyelot for you??
Posted by Kathy | September 11, 2005 1:09 PM
That's so terrible! :(
Posted by Elspeth | September 11, 2005 12:08 PM
damned thieves. don't take the knitting!!! argh. and the glasses.
poor carrieoke!

As someone who recently went through a break in, I completely sympathize with you. My house was broken into a few weeks back. I remember feeling scared and confused, amoung other things. It completely is beyond me why they broke into my house, in the middle of the day, and took some items but left other valuables. Stealing someone's knitting? That is really unbelievable.
Posted by emily | September 11, 2005 11:07 AM
Grrrrrr! That is so freakin' annoying! Someone tried to break into my trunk once (the trunk on my car not the one on my person... I know what you were thinking). They were unsuccessful in gaining access but very successful in making me have to get a whole new trunk door thingy. Scumbags! All of 'em!
Posted by Allison | September 11, 2005 10:50 AM
Oh no--that SUCKS! I can't imagine how pissed I'd be if someone took my knitting. Grrr... Seems like you're taking it much better than I would. Glad the police officer was nice anyway. :)
Posted by Stephanie | September 11, 2005 10:40 AM
Maybe you could scour the area for your knitting, because I'm guessing that the thief went through your purse and immediately discarded what he (yes, that's an assumption) didn't want. Someone stole your knitting...that should carry some pretty heavy penalties.
Do you have the serial # of the camera anywhere?
what a blecchy thing to happen. I'm sorry!
Posted by Em | September 11, 2005 9:31 AM
Carrie I'm so sorry! I'd be in tears, you seem to be handling it okay. Good thing you've got such great schmoo's around you.
Posted by Kate | September 11, 2005 9:15 AM
That stinks. Your digital camera and your knitting. I would be seriously depressed.
Posted by Linda | September 11, 2005 8:43 AM
Damn those thieves! I'm so sorry that happened. It's horrible how we can't trust anyone. I always put all stuff in my trunk because some people are rat thieves.
Posted by Becky | September 11, 2005 4:27 AM
Gawddamn I'm still mad about your break-in. Grrr. Stupid jerkies. The are so jerkwad. I hate.
We had good times with you and the schmoo, though.
Posted by Jenny | September 11, 2005 1:45 AM
nice pic of you fisting your own mouth on AM's blog -- that IS you, isn't it? because i don't want you to read this and flip out. although you might anyways.
love!
Posted by nicole | September 11, 2005 12:55 AM
So much for working out at ritzy gyms! Stolen knitting? I wonder if that was a first for the young officer.
Posted by Gina | September 11, 2005 12:11 AM
Yikes...the glasses, the knitting. Not to mention the car. I am so sorry sweetie. At least you don't seem to Crappy McCrapperton to me.
On a sort of weird sidenote, I had a dream where you came to visit me, like we were old buddies or somethiing. I know that screams a little "stalker" but it was pretty funny. Of course we were knitting too...
Posted by Skylar | September 10, 2005 10:16 PM
oh carrie!!!! i KNOW how you feel:<.....same thing happened to my car last wednesday:<....but at LEAST they didn't take my KNITTING:<.....so sad to hear that.
Posted by gaby | September 10, 2005 10:15 PM
Carrie,
You are like the 5th person I have heard of in the last 2 months that this has happened to. I seriously think the gyms need to hire armed security to patrol the lots. I mean they charge enough for the memberships right?
I am glad they did not get your wallet, but the knitting? Dam. Here is a hint I have found in the past works for when I was robbed while in a store. Go to the dumpsters at businesses in the area. Most times, the assholes (sorry, but they are) just ditch the crap they do not want. Good luck Schmoo.
Posted by Betsy | September 10, 2005 9:55 PM
Oh no! I'm glad it was a just a piece of your knitting, though, and not the whole thing . . . not that that really helps, I know, but . . . I'm so sorry!!
Posted by --Deb | September 10, 2005 9:43 PM
That completely sucks. I wish there were considerate theives, that could look inside first and see if there's anything they don't "need" and throw it back. I can't believe they stole your knitting.
Posted by Jenn | September 10, 2005 9:13 PM
Damn them! I don't want to get in the way of a good excuse to get a whole set of Denise needles, but you can buy replacement parts pretty inexpensively, my dog ate my size 8s, and I also got some really long cords at the same time. They're at http://www.knitdenise.com/.
Posted by Debbie | September 10, 2005 8:34 PM
Oh, sweetie, I'm so sorry about your car getting broken into! That sucks so bad, especially since they took your knitting. Hub and I both had our cars broken into on the same night, parked at our apartment complex! And I really had nothing of value in the car, but they took my almost-brand-new prescription sunglasses and my work ID badge. Grrrr. Anyway, I'm just glad you didn't leave your wallet, etc -- that'd be even more of a nightmare.
Posted by chris | September 10, 2005 8:30 PM
Oh, that totally sucks. I'm sorry your car got broken into. :(
Posted by Marnie | September 10, 2005 6:56 PM
Ewwww! That sucks. I hope you didn't get a lot done on that piece. As much as I'd be mad that they got my knitting, I'd be even more if they got my brand new glasses.. Glasses aren't cheap and yours sounded fab!
Posted by Angela | September 10, 2005 6:26 PM
That's just awful. Poor knitting. I wonder where it is now? What are the odds that the person who stole is a knitter? Maybe it would make them feel bad.
I'm pretty sure if you contact the nice Denise Interchangeables people, they'll sell you just the needle and cord you had stolen, so you won't have to buy a whole new set. If you tell them your sob story, they might even send them for free!
Posted by Lesley | September 10, 2005 6:21 PM
That sucks ass, babe. The last time Lala's car was broken into they took her stereo and her Altoid Sours. Tell me they weren't like 14 years old. Candy! Yay! Another time they took her TAPE deck. Where you gonna pawn a tape deck, huh? Poor knitting-stolen you. That deserves fiber-therapy, for sure.
Posted by Rachael | September 10, 2005 5:43 PM
How craptacular. I'd be ready to kill if someone took my knitting.
But, erm, Carrie, honey? Seriously: tell me you didn't actually leave your purse on the seat of your car?
