Swanky
What a weekend! Do you want to hear about the knitting first, or the swanky dinner? .....
Okay, knitting first.
I finished knitting on my half clappy on the way home from Maryland. (Sorry I've been a little delinquent on the picture...)

My clappy needs some blocky.
I used some beautiful recycled silk yarn for my half clappy, and I've so far been scared to block it or do anything to it because I didn't want the yarn to get ruined. But, then I did some googling, and it turns out that you can handwash this yarn in cold water. I'm going to take that as a go-ahead to block it gently in some cold water and see how it goes. The article I read said that the yarn's texture might change a little bit, but I'm okay with that. I just didn't want it to be water stained! Still deciding if the clappy stays with me or becomes a gift....
And then I went and started something new!

Hello, Flower Basket Shawl!
This is my second attempt at the Flower Basket Shawl -- my first attempt was foiled by some furry yarn and some wine. (Note to self: lace and wine do NOT mix.) A fabulous friend gifted me with some Brown Sheep Cotton Fine and it's absolutely perfect for this project. (Sorry my picture doesn't really show off the pattern...but do you like my pajama pants?) I'm hoping that mine looks as lovely as this girl's...
Jacob's first sock is SO. CLOSE. I'm decreasing for the toe right now. Yee-haw!
Okay, and now for the fancy non-knitting content..
First of all, I saw Star Wars this weekend. SO. GOOD. I hate seeing movies in the movie theatre, HATE IT, I don't ever go (much to Jacob's dismay), but I decided to stick it out for this one, and I'm SO glad I did. I brought my knitting and I didn't pick it up. not ONCE. It's excellent!
Then, on Saturday, my sister Cathy hooked me and Anne Marie up with some tickets to the ACLU Bill of Rights Dinner in Atlanta. Can you say, swanky?!?!!? I was not prepared for how fancy and pretty this dinner was. Of course we got all dressed up:

We clean up real nice, dontcha think?
And good thing we put on our Sunday best. We got to the reception before the dinner, and as I was rushing to the open bar, I noticed that General Wesley Clark was hanging out by the bar. Fun times. And then I found out that Coretta Scott King was being honored! The dinner actually honored lots of really great people who are working hard for important changes.
The reason we actually got to go is because they were honoring three high school students from Georgia who tried to start a gay-straight alliance at their high school and faced a lot of crap from their community and the school administration. I wrote about going to the high school and protesting here.
I thought it was pretty cool of the ACLU to recognize these girls along with Coretta Scott King and lots of other high profile people in Georgia. Here's me and my sister with the honorees:

Fun times, fer sure.
It was a really great night. Living in Georgia, it's easy to forget that there are people fighting for the right things in our state's government, so it was a nice reminder.
P.S. If I had known how fancy the dinner was going to be, I might have opted for a dress with less scandalous cleavage. There was some double stick tape involved.
P.S. again. I'm glad my twin sister is classy, because I don't think I would've been invited to this thing otherwise. Thanks, Cathy, for sharing the class with me and Anne Marie. :)

Clapotis is fan-clap-tic! Okay, that was cheesy. And the flower basket shawl is going to be gorgeous :)
Can you believe that we dined with Coretta Scott king? And that politician's (the putz) speech. I'm not sure how we got into that place, but I like the way them thar rich folk spend an evening! And what an honor to meet Kerry Pacer and her brave sister and friends :)
I wish I were as corageous (or as gay) in high school!

When I read the words "half-clap", my first thought was to advise you to get some antibiotics. But no! Instead, there is a BEE-YOU-TEE-FUL knitted creation staring back at me. It's gorgeous.
You guys look pretty fabulous as well. Y'all clean up so purdy! What a great cause, and sounds like a great time.

i think you need not worry at ALL about how you look. So classy indeed! and as coco chanel said, you are never over dressed or under dressed in a little black dress. she didn't mention double stick tape, tho.

Lace and I don't mix well - wine or no wine! But that flower basket shawl and half clap (sounds dirty)looks good! What is the sound of one half of a clap clapping??
That dinner looks like fun and swanky and for a good cause! You ladies look lovely.

it's so great to get dressed up every once in a while. After college, life doesn't hand you too many of those opportunities except for your wedding day and maybe a fun way to clean the house. Wait, was that out loud?
Your clap is looking really cute (although you must be careful with your wording when telling others about it or you might get some strange looks).

You gals look so good! I agree - I hate going to the theater but for Star Wars I will. I thought I was the only person out there who hates watching movies at the theater, personally I'd rather be all cozied up on my couch but that's just me.
Flower Basket Shawl looks good - I've been working on it as well but you've got far more progress than me.

You guys look great for the fanciness. That situation with the high school students is pretty ugly; we had something very similar happen at my high school when some friends and I tried to start a GSA. I'd hoped that other students wouldn't have to face that nonsense, there's still so much progress we need to make.
Your clapotis looks great! I never would have thought to use that yarn for it but it's fabulous! Are you having any issue with color consistancy between skeins?

Great cause, gorgeous girls! The clap looks great - good luck with the Flower Basket shawl. Can't wait to see the sock. Yay! Have a great day!

I love Cotton Fine! Good luck with the Flower Basket shawl. I agree with you re lace and wine.
And y'all look FABULOUS. :-)

Fabby Clappy!...can't wait to see your flower basket!
Your swanky dinner sounds awesome! That's so cool that those girls were honored for their actions. I hope it will stir more kids their age to get involved and make change.

ooh, y'all sure look pretty! And I'm muy curious about this double-stick tape. Maybe you can guide me through it at knitting this week? :)

I am sure your will be beautiful! What a great yarn you chose...
Speaking of, that clapotis is gorgeous! Can't wait to see you model it.
You girls are so beautiful- sounds like an amazing evening! It is fun to get all dressed up sometimes!
Posted by frecklegirl | May 23, 2005 12:06 PM
You certainly do look swanky! Sounds like a great night!
I totally thought that you wanted your pajama pants to look as nice as Frecklegirl's and was a bit confused (it's late!), but upon rereading it I see what you mean. I'm sure your flower basket will be just as beautiful as hers and all the other nice ones out there.
That's all from here--keep up the good work. Goodnight!
