News Flash

We interrupt your regularly scheduled knitting blog for a news flash:

My twin sister Cathy is fabulous for many reasons. But, after being inspired by our own fabulous Rachael, now she's gone and raised the bar of fabulousness even higher: She is running a marathon for the American Stroke Association.

That's right, folks, 26 miles. (ouch.)

Cathy and I have a particular interest in the American Stroke Association, because our dad had a stroke in 2001. At the time, we were living in Atlanta, and he was living in Charleston, SC. It was really hard for our family because we could knew something was wrong, even over the phone, and we were powerless to help him because we were so far away.

Now we know that what we heard were the signs of an imminent stroke. My father survived his stroke, and went through a long recovery period, and is now healthy and strong in North Carolina. But we feel really strongly about stroke research and education because of my dad's story.

The bottom line? Cathy is raising money for her marathon. Your donations will go to the American Stroke Association -- and their main goals are teach people the warning signs of stroke; fund research to find ways to prevent stroke; develop guidelines for physicians to treat people with stroke; and provide stroke survivors and their families a place to get answers after a stroke. Cathy is running this marathon in honor of our father, and for so many stroke victims everywhere.

Cathy's donation website is here : Cathy's Marathon Website. Now, I'm not going to be running a marathon anytime soon...I'm still working on that whole exercising thing. But my sister Cathy can do it, and she will, with your help. YAY! And thanks, from me and Cat, and from my dad.

I feel bad, I tried to donate on her site but it didn't work for some reason (maybe it's because I'm using a US card with a Canadian address)...but in any case, GO CATHY! I support her wholeheartedly, pun fully intended...I supposedly have a hole in my heart that caused me to have a stroke in January of this year, and I'm only 37. I'm happy to see that Cathy is taking time and energy to fight, and wish I could help more. Here's to Cathy's very strong heart! :-)

Thanks for all of the good luck wishes, everyone!! I will certainly need it...

First Cathy...then you! Right? I am writing her a check tonight. Good luck Cathy!

That is great!

I did a marathon in 2000 for Team in Training. I raised money for a leukemia patient. It was a great experience!!

Good Luck!!!!

You go, Cathy!

WOW! Way to go Cathy!!!

best of luck to cathy! i know you'll be cheering her on. you should make her a knitted race number or something. ;)

Yay for Cathy! That is amazing!

that's awesome that cathy is taking on such an endeavor, and your dad will be so proud of her. i'm soooo broke right now. no yarn, no nothin', just basic bills, but as soon a si catch up, i'll donate something!!!!!

What an amazing girl!!! I am in total awe -it's such a fantastic thing that she is doing.

Sending lots of luck and best wishes Cathy's way!

Sign me up, sister. Oh, wait, I'll go to Cathy's site and sign my damn self up. ;-)

Oh wow! What a great cause. I am so impressed with her for doing a marathon at all, and then doing it to raise money for such a good cause too. Thanks for sharing about your dad's stroke, too-- I am going to go read those warning signs right now.

What a woman! I can't imagine running that far. I hope you are able to raise bunches of money :)

I am so impressed by your sister! I know she will be able to do it- what incredible motivation. You have a lovely family!

Oh my gosh, I am so impressed and thrilled that Cathy is doing the marathon (26 miles!!) for such a great cause. Your dad is one of the cutest folks on your blog, and that's saying a lot, with all the cuteness going on here at Carrioke's. My grandfather also suffered a couple strokes and worked to recover, so this is a topic near and dear to me too. I'm popping over to Cathy's site now. Best to you all!
