Monday , Monday
Damn, it really feels like Monday today. SO much to do at work.
But the weekend was so great! Fondue was fabulous, of course -- we were too full of food and wine to take any pictures of the fondue (although we did think of it the next day) but it was a grand feast. Grand!
I got to knit all day Saturday while I watched a high school basketball game. On Friday, I cast on for Sock Number Two in the Lovely Purply Stripeyness yarn (and ya'll don't hate me, but I seriously don't know what kind of sock yarn this is! It was a gift from Penny over at Sith Knits, and I think she was unsure too .. edited to add: She remembers! As you can see in the comments, Penny says that the purple yarn is Lorna's Laces in Purple Club. Thanks!), so I was working my way towards the heel flap on Saturday. But here's an interesting picture to show you:

On the left, we have Sock 2. On the right, we have Sock 1. D'oh.
Now, I love the craziness of variegated yarn. I didn't really want the socks to match exactly. But my problem is that I like the little narrow stripes on my new sock BETTER than the wide stripes! Here's what I did differently on Sock 2 : I cast on 64 sts instead of 68 sts because the first sock was a tad too big. Now, would the four stitches make the striping pattern differ that much, or is it just the yarn? And the other question is ... do I like the narrow stripes enough to frog Sock 1 and re-knit it, in hopes of getting narrow stripes? Do I? I'm going to finish Sock 2 and see how I feel.
Anyways. In other knitting news, I gave my mom her much belated birthday poncho this weekend, and she liked it!

Cute Poncho Mom.
(And you were all right about leaving the fringe long, by the way.) I think I'm all poncho-ed out for a little while, but those Yarn Harlot ponchos sure make good presents. And they're so easy to knit.
I also finished knitting the second sleeve of Jacob's sweater ... and *cringe* it looks kinda different than the first sleeve. D'oh. I'm going to get some expert opinions at knitting night this week to see if I can work around the weirdness, but I'm so bummed. I really, really don't want to rip out either sleeve, but I also want Jacob to be able to wear the sweater. Harumph. I'm NOT showing a picture, because then you will all tell me that I HAVE to reknit one of them. And you will probably be right. *sigh*
Now for a completely unrelated picture! My sister got her wedding pics back and they are gorgeous, but for some reason, every picture of me and Jacob dancing is just awful. But my uncle took a bunch of pictures that he emailed me today, and, joy, there's a semi-cute picture of me and my schmoo cutting a rug! Wanna see?
Dance, dance, dance...
Thanks for all the lovely comments about my new site look! I'm still working on switching all the archives, etc, over, but I'm happy with the home page. Yay blog makeover.

lovin' the redesign, lovin' it, LOVING it.

Love the new site design! Turns out I know Mary Jessica, she is also a crafty schmoo in this small, small world! I am a classic Libra sucker for symmetry, but each sock looks cool so I might keep it. Unless the fit bothers you, then rip it. You don't want to love one sock more than the other, the unloved one might get jealous and bunch up on you and give you a blister.

Oh I have that same yarn in my stash, nice to see it works up so good. I love purple! Loving the new look too!!

I love variegated yarn too but it really pisses me off somtimes! Like your sock problem... or when the same damn color keeps stacking on top of itself! (that is my problem with Clapotis)
Your mom is adorable in her new poncho- great job! :)
I just started doing my sleeves for my cabled cardigan and I know exactly what you mean with the sleeves being different. I have a sweater that is still sitting in my drawer after 2 years because the sleeves didn't match up. So this time I am knitting them both at the same time! yaay! I hope it works.

the new site design is super groovy, your mom is super cute (not to mention the poncho, which is super lovely) and you and Jacob are super cool! (ok, that one was lame but i ran out of supers...)
I'd keep the mismatched socks but that's just me...:)

Your socks are turning out great! Actually, I do remember the yarn, because I bought it the first time I went into a real yarn store. It's Lorna's Laces in Purple Club. I like the thinner stripes too. I had no idea the yarn would work up that way. I have a question...what do the edges of your Clapotis look like? Mine are kind of, um, bumpy.
Love the new site makeover, and the dancing picture is cute too!

Bummer on the unmatching sock/sleeve dilemma. It would irk me for a while, but because my laziness would prolly eventually win out, I would just let it be. Not a good model to follow or anything, just wanted to pipe in some support. :)
Also, super cute pics of your mom in her poncho and of you and Jacob cutting a mean rug!

I love the sock yarn -- tres bon! I just spun up some gorgeous pine green Merino in sock weight and tonight I shall officially start my first socks with my own handmade yarn. I absolutely can't wait!

I love the Crafty Schmoo makeover!
Those socks are striping up super cool, and I TOLD YOU THAT PONCHO WOULD FIT YO' MAMA! It fits perfectly! And, as photogenic as you are...you look a bit like a drunk in the wedding photo with one eye not open all the way. HA!
Can't wait to see you tonight...it's been too long (OMG I've gone 5 days without seeing Carrie! My world does not accept this)

Great makeover, and the illustration has a nice personal touch. The extra 4 sts DO make a difference, so unfortunately you'll have to rip Sock 1... You are making good progress on knitting technique, I have yet to try out dpns!

definitely the 4 stitches that did it. b/c it's 4 stitches each round so incrementally moves the point at which things start/end to a completely different position. :)
socks are fast - doesn't take that long to redo... so you can either be happy with the mismatch or redo. :)
you look v. cute in the wedding picture. cute...and drunk?

wow, who would have thought dec'ing by 4 make such a diff. they're both cool though. love the poncho.

OOOH! I love your new site look! It's so you, Miss C!
P.S. Did you know that you were mentioned in an article in the Australian Knitting mag? A friend sent me a copy and your site is mentioned, with a big ole image of a screenshot of your site (the one with the girl looking through a camera). I'm so proud of ya!

ps - it would KIIILLL me to have to rip back an entire sock. OH! WAIT! Maybe you can knit a THIRD sock, right? TWO OF THEM will HAVE to match, no? THEN, the third can act as BACKUP!

Thanks for the heads up on that sock pattern. Hubby is making some now. Gotta love a man who knits, even if he does catch on faster than I sometimes, sniff! Yours look fab :) Cute shot of you and Jacob, you make a really sweet couple. Your mom looks great in the poncho, very hip!

I am loving those socks - what great color! Purple... mmm....

I've got to admit that I like sock number two better. On the other hand, I don't think that I'd frog them. I'd chaulk it up to the beauty of handpaint and ask myself if anyone whould really notice my socks under my jeans?

New site design looks great, and your mom does, too!!

Hey, the new site design is awesome!
I like the two different socks. They're different yet the same. I enjoy their differentness. You guys look cute dancing! There's a scary/funny picture of Chris and I dancing at our friend Shelly's wedding here: http://www.in-dreams.com/photo_albums/shellywed/index-Pages/Image16.html

You, your sis and your mom all have that same fab-o smile! And I like your purple socks...both of them. Good luck deciding on whether to re-knit #1. I guess it depends on how differently they feel when they are each on a foot. I kinda like the non-matching look. BTW, hop over and join my first ever contest! Delicious yarn goodness of some sort will be the prize! =p

hey chickie:
the striping changes were a result of the fewer stitches, it really does make a difference.
Don't worry about jacob's sweater - we'll work it out tomorrow for sure. have faith. ;-)

I LOVE your purple socks (the thin strips - YUM). Your mom looks so hapy in her poncho!
Posted by Jackie | January 24, 2005 6:02 PM
it's the number of stitches that did the stripe thing..... i knit socks with yarn like that, and i noticed that during decreases the stripes became much smaller.....
AND, i might be able to help with the type of yarn - i bought some that looked similar to that (in different colours though - reds, purples, oranges, pinks, like a sunrise) from a toronto yarn store, and they said that it was from "fleece artist".. some person who handpaints merino sock yarn. the stuff's beautiful.
hope that helps

NEW LOOK! WOO HOO!!!! I love the little boob holder sweater in the drawing!!! cute! And I'm glad you didn't listen to me and CUT the fringe, as it's just the right length on your mom!!!
Posted by lara | January 24, 2005 5:31 PM
I can't believe you don't know what that gorgeous yarn is! I'll forgive you though. It's weird it's doing that funny striping thing. I like the 2nd better, but like you I don't know if I'd take the time to rip out the 1st hoping it could be fixed. Sorry bout your sleeve dilemma. It's good to have experts around :)
