Dance, Monkey! Dance!
So, I was going to write a long entry about how I've had a bad week and grumble grumble, but I've been reading blogs today and lots of people are having bad weeks, and lots of people are having MUCH WORSE weeks than me. So, no grumbles here. So there.
I did figure out what I wanted to make with the lovely silk from my last entry ... do you know what this is?

Clap on, clap off.
(Makes Karate Kid waxing motion with hands.)
Yep, it's Clapotis. And this pattern is really fun to knit, seriously. I've read that on blogs before and thought, yeah, sure. Everything's fun to knit. But THIS is FUN! I love ktbl-ing. I love pfb-ing. I love having a long row of stitch markers to stare at while I'm knitting. And I love my pretty pretty silk yarn. I'm not sure if I'm going to have enough for a whole big Clappy, so I'm going to make a half-Clappy and see how it looks. (There are great instructions at the end of the pattern for making a smaller or larger piece. )
Yay.
I'm going on a little trip to see my dad next week, and I'm planning on bringing the sleeve to Jacob's sweater to finish, and probably the pieces to sew up. Maybe ... just maybe ... I'll have the whole darn thing all finished by next week. Har.
In other news, I ran this week for the first time. Well, ran - walked. But it was a little over 2 miles and it felt great (after it was over.) I'm doing this beginner's program - 0 to 3 miles in Ten Easy Weeks! - and if after Ten Easy Weeks! running is no fun, I will stop immediately and eat a Blizzard. Just kidding. I will find another activity to replace the running. Perhaps it will involve Dance Dance Revolution at the bowling alley:

We are so about to dance our little tails off in this picture.
(Drew's on the left, and I'm on the right.)
I guess I'll try to track my running progress somewhere on here, although it may get depressing when I lose all interest in exercising and just want to knit and watch Law and Order: SVU. I guess if I stop running, I can track which episodes of Law and Order I've watched. GO TEAM.

Carrie, keep on running! If you need me to, I will tell Jacob to run with you for moral support! When you can run 3 miles without stopping, I will reward you with a BIG dinner, including a blizzard if you want! or cheescake! or both!

Go Carrie! Go Carrie! Go Carrie!
Go Clapotis! Go Clapotis! Go Clapotis!
A co-worker of mine bought a DVD from AVON that trains you to do a three-mile run/jog. I personally go to Curves. My parents developed on-set diabetes and I'm trying to hold that off as long as possible.
Oh, and I love that DDR, haven't tried it yet. Looks like a lot of fun. Ooo, I just remembered a snipit of a commercial for a show. It was panning (going right to left) of a row of woman running on treadmills and trying to knit at the same time. Watching TV and knitting I'm learning to, but I don't think I can do that.
You can do it Carrie! See all the support you're getting!

I love to watch and hear people playing those things...pixie and I are mezmerized every time we play mini golf (they have one too)...we love to hear the rhythmic stomping and I bet you are really good!
YAY FOR silk clapoteeees!

That half clappy is looking good so far! Good luck with the running. I am not a runner, but I admire those who are. Everyone is starting to exercise (must be that new year stuff), now I'm gonna have to get off my butt and do something too. Thanks a lot! :)

I love that recycled silk yarn! I used it to make a pillow for my mom. I knit a square in the round (like for the beginnings of the french market bag on knitty), and did a border and a back in black, cheepy chenile (however you spell that). It was pretty!
As for the running, you can do it! That is how I taught myself to like running and it totally worked for me. You get your legs and your lungs used to it and then it becomes something your body wants to do. Good luck!

DDR! I can't believe you got Drew to do that. Ha! It doesn't look that hard from the picture.
And yay! for running! Instead of running last night I ate pizza. Must run tonight!!! You too, eh!?

That silk yarn time looks so nice! Someday I will try dance dance revolution. I saw some young obese children on the Today show once who were losing weight that way. And Matt Lauer was totally laughing at them!

I am making the Clapotis too... it is a fun pattern! Especially when you get to drop the stitches... ON PURPOSE! I feel like a badass!
I love that pic of you and Drew- no action shots though? :)

I love to knit while watching Law and Order SVU...they have marathons on a few stations here a couple times a week... so I get an average of 5 hours of combined knitting/SVU'ing...wait that sounds kind of sad... maybe I should be running too!

Eeek running. Good luck! I wish so hard I was one of those people who exercise lots but I'm too unfit - i went running once and felt so proud, but couldn't bring myself to go again!
Good use for the silk - it will be lovely :)

Run, Carrie, run!

Yay clapotis! I just started one too and it is so fun to knit. Good luck with the running... sorry I can't offer and real life-based inspiration, but if anyone can do it, you can!

Cool clapotis! And I'm so impressed that you are running, too. I totally need to pick up the book you mentioned. My husband jogs 4 miles a day, every day. He makes outdoor exercise sound awesome and fun. Thing is - we're in Wisconsin, and I'm not keen on going out when it's below freezing.
DDR is something I'd love to try. Haven't been in an arcade in a while, though. (I think there's an Xbox version??)

Where did you find the running program? Is it a book? ps love that silk!
Posted by Kitty | January 13, 2005 8:59 PM
I have wanted to do DDR for ages, but a) I'm uncoordinated and b) I'm middle-aged, and I *know* people would laugh at the old broad trying to do the moves. Oh well, maybe I'll find a deserted arcade some day....

Another Law and Order: SVU fan! That is my favorite show. Olivia Benson is my heroine. :)

Running! Clapotis! DDR! Wow, you're my kinda gal :-)
Maybe we should make a knitters-who-run group - I'm starting up a fitness blog (which isn't functional yet) but my goal is to do a 10K in July and run the whole thing. Very kind of you to avoid the mid-January-crap-week dogpile. And I love your Clapotis! I just have to figure out what yarn to use and I think I'll be making one myself pretty darned soon...

What is clapotis?
Also Carrie you have inspired me to start my own blog. I am blog-ignorant but getting there....any tips would be greatly appriciated

Imagine if someone were to combine DDR and karaoke! Hee hee hee!

I am in the same boat. I am starting a running program to be healthy. And I hate it. But I have signed up for a 5K so now I have to stick with it. I wouldn't want to be the last one across the finish line!
Posted by Allison | January 13, 2005 5:30 PM
Carrie, I can't see your Clapotis images! There are soooo many people knitting it right now, I am so tempted to knit it too. Aaargh!

I have a love hate relationship with DDR. I love watching people do it, but hate the idea that someone might drag me onto it and people will watch me. Eek! I imagine it's much more fun exercise than running though...
Posted by stacey | January 13, 2005 3:39 PM
GO Carrie! Beware of DDR. People have been known to hurt themselves playing that game.
I want to make Clapotis! It looks like fun.
