Socktacular!
I am the proud owner of my first completed pair of socks.

Blue Stripey Socks, meet the world!
Hooray! Aren't they adorable? I'm full of sock pride today, so pardon me if I'm bragging. But my socks are so cute. I'm a little sad about sending them to their recipient, because that means I will have to part with them, but it also means that I have a pair of lovely handknitted socks coming my way! Yahoo! I used a combination of Bonne Marie's Sock Love Pattern (found here) and this sock pattern for Regia sock yarn. (Regia Sock Yarn provided by Miss Fabulous High Energy Knits Jenny (thanks!)
When I finished Sock #2, I liked the toe so much that I ripped out finished Sock #1 to make the toes match more closely. I am SO glad I did. And I have a confession to make: today, when the fire alarm went off at work, the first thing I picked up to evacuate the building with were my PRETTY KNITTED SOCKS. D'oh.
So now what? Well, I have a load of Christmas knitting to do...I have one big project in the works, and several little things that I'm going to make for friends. Oh, and maybe some socks. I can't show you many pictures of the projects, partly some of the recipients read this blog, but mostly because I haven't started ANY of them yet.
San Francisco trip plans are coming together, and it seems like there a lot of knitbloggers who live on the other side of the country. YAY! And the yarn stores... oh, the yarn stores. I just have to keep focused on why I'm visiting (do some recording, check out the city, etc) and not spend too much money. And, when I get back, decisions will have to be made.
Luckily, when I get back, I will only have three days of work before my Christmas holiday (the best perk of being University staff! Long holiday breaks!) That means more relaxing, and lots of time to think things over.
In completely unrelated news, Bella has seemed really down the past couple of days. **12/3/04 - Edited to add: Bella sends love to all of her sweet caring friends out there in Blog Land. She is feeling much better and wants to give you all a sloppy wet schmoo kiss. MWAH!!** And she feels hot. Do dogs get fevers? Or am I an insane doggy mommy? Here's what she's looked like for three days:

I'm a sickly little schmoo.
So send Bella some healthy doggy vibes. And send me the financially responsible vibes.
Did I mention how cute my socks are?

Those socks are fabulous! I envy people who can churn out two socks. I doubt I'd be able to get the second one done. Go Carrie!
I'm so sorry that Bella is not feeling well. Poor little schmoo. Lucy and I send her big time get well wishes!

May I have some holiday socks with reindeer on them, please?
Just kidding. I always like to beg for knitted items on your blog. I'm glad Bella is better, and I really like your socks.
Come visit us this weekend, before you leave for San Fran. I hear it sucks there. Just kidding, before people think I'm serious-- I'm just sad that my twin might be moving away from me :(

Glad Miss Bella is feeling better. Sadie sends get well doggie vibes.

A finished pair of socks gives me more pleasure than anything else I knit. They also have the highest "wow!" factor when you work on them in front of non-knitters. Yours look great!
You haven't started your holiday knitting yet? You are as bad as I am! This is the first time I have knit Christmas presents and I have only finished one item on a nine-item list. We've got to get going!

Sweet socks!
Poor little Bella! I am glad to hear that she is feeling better, but I would totally flip if my Casey were looking so sad and feeling all feverish too! =(

the socks look great. smooches to bella. :)

Yep...as all have told you here, schmoos get fevers. You don't have to have a special themometer from a vet...go to the drug store and get a regular rectal themometer...put some petroleum jelly on the tip (Bella will thank you for it) and insert about an inch in. Normal temperatures for dogs are around 100.5-102. If she is above that, she has a fever. If she is over 104, it is dangerous and she should go to a vet immediately. When inserting, it is probably best if you have someone help hold her and keep her steady, as well as talk reassuring to her. It's also good to put your arm or hand under ther belly region when inserting so she doesn't sit while you do it...I also usually steady my hand by holding on to the base of the tail while inserting and holding it there waiting for the temp. You don't want any broken themometers! Most dogs are pretty comfortable with it. Some don't seem to even notice. Other's just get the pitiful "what the hell are you doing to me look" and try scooting the butt down to the ground. Good luck! Marley sends her love and get well wishes...and I do too!

VERY cute socks indeed!

That picture of Bella made me want to cry, especially since she's usually such a sassy girl. I hope she feels better really soon.

Congrats on your first pair of socks. They look great!

I've been lurking on your blog -- and meaning to post -- for a while. First off, your poor little Schmoo. If I were you, I'd take her to the vet -- dogs can get fevers, and she might need some kind of antibiotics. If that doesn't make you financially responsible on your trip to SF, I don't know what else will. I'm sending healthy schmoo vibes, and even my two cats are wishing Bella well.
Pertaining to knitting matters, I have to see that you -- and your blog -- are so joyful. Your pictures are great, you, your family, friends and Jacob always have such great smiles, and you take such joy in knitting that your enthusiasm is infectious. Keep up the great blogging (and knitting)

socktacular indeed!

Poor little bella! What a sad little face! I hope she feels better fast.
Your socks are amazing. You are totally a goddess of the yarn.

Your socks look fab! I'm so full of sock pride for you too! :) (Now are you off to make a pair for you to keep? lol)
Poor little schmoo. Give Bella lots of hugs and keep us updated on how she's doing. If she's like this for much longer, you may want to take her in... just to relieve mommy. :)

Gasp!! SHE.. I hope SHE is feeling better soon.. (Gawd forbid anyone call my ponytailed shihtzu guy a SHE! ;)
Posted by amy | December 3, 2004 12:21 AM
I have sock envy.
My dog is depressed right now. Too much rain = not enough walks, poor guy. If the 'flu keeps up you might want to take him in, if only for reassurance he is ok..
Posted by amy | December 2, 2004 10:52 PM
Bella is such a schmoo. I hope she feels better. Kayla (white dog) used to get depressed - she could have the blahs. If you make it to SF, you must go to Artfibers. Take lots of money. You'll want everything.
Posted by Julia | December 2, 2004 10:02 PM
I was going to tell you all about puppy fevers but it looks you have enough information! I hope Bella feels better soon. Your socks are way cool - I can't believe those are your first ones. It was a good idea to evacuate with them, sock yarn is probably not flame-retardant.

I am sooo excited for your trip to SF. I'm a friend of "Run on Sentences" Elizabeth and we promise to show you a great old time CHEAP time in SF. Though I have no blog of my own, I think I've entered that dangerous world of blog-stalkers...kidding! And on your music ambitions, we know a local group Ten Mile Tide (www.tenmiletide.com). I don't know if they're out touring but if you're interested, maybe we can get you in touch with the boys.

I am full of sock pride for you too!!!
Odile gets in funks like that as well - never taken her to the vet, though. All the vet will say is "your dog has some cold thing" or something. That's happened to me before and I'm a human who can communicate verbally.
Posted by Valerie | December 2, 2004 7:45 PM
Great socks! I love the colour of them. Are they comfy to wear?
Yes, dogs can get colds. If her nose is warm and dry, a trip to the vet might be a good idea. Lots of good vibes to your little puppy, she is so cute!
Posted by Dani | December 2, 2004 6:15 PM
Poor little schmoo.
Your socks look fantastic!
I just started my first pair of socks. I live in fear of the heel.
Posted by meg | December 2, 2004 5:35 PM
Congrats on your first pair of socks! Now, you have to knit a pair for yourself! I hope Bella feels better very very soon!
Posted by Rossana | December 2, 2004 5:08 PM
your socks *are* mighty cute!! nice job! I'm so jealous that you have finished socks. I've sort of abandoned mine for the Great Green Sweater of DOOM.
I hope bella feels better soon!
Posted by Lara | December 2, 2004 5:04 PM
My doggie and I will send healthy schmoo vibes your way! My poor dog was pukey a few weeks ago and he looked like Bella in that picture for a few days. I hope she's feeling better soon!
So you evacuated the socks, a girl's gotta have her priorities! They look great!
Posted by Jenn | December 2, 2004 3:58 PM
Hooray for cute socks! They look fantastic. I completed my first pair last week, so I am totally with you on feeling the true sense of accomplishment.
I'm sending your schmoo good healthy-pup vibes! Poor Bella.
Posted by Ann | December 2, 2004 3:47 PM
Poor little Bellaschmoo! Get better soon!
Don't tell me that you're going to be in SF the same time Rachael's in Hawaii. That would be so sad.
Posted by Em | December 2, 2004 3:44 PM
Poor puppy! Dogs do get fevers, and since she is so little, you might want to take her in to the vet. They will want to know what, if anything, she's been eating. You might want to pick up a doggie thermometer. I got ours from our vet. You need to take it the same way you would for a baby, yup, you know where. If she has something bacterial, you'll want her on anibiotics right away. Good luck! I hope she feels better soon!
Oh, cool socks! Congratulations! They look great!
Posted by Amy Lu | December 2, 2004 3:30 PM
Very cute socks and Very cute Bella. Hope it isn't doggie fever or doggie sickness. Maybe Bella is just getting some pre-holiday doggie depression...I think I'm getting that. Well actually it's more like pre-finals student depression, but same diff.
Posted by Vicki | December 2, 2004 3:26 PM
Great looking socks! You did a terrific job! Excellent.
Poor Bella, I hope she feels better!
Posted by heather | December 2, 2004 3:08 PM
The socks are great! I've never knit socks, but seeing all of these great creations makes it pretty tempting.
Poor Bella, I know cats can get fevers and they are certainly pitiful when they do. If she's been down for a few days she might need to see the vet :( Hope she feels better soon.
Posted by Shelby | December 2, 2004 3:02 PM
The socks look awesome! Also, dogs do get fevers...does she still have an appetite? Hope she gets to feeling better soon!
Posted by Kim | December 2, 2004 3:00 PM
Ooooh, give the Schmoo a belly scratch from me. Doggies definitely get fevers. Hopefully it will pass quickly. I hope she feels better very soon.
The socks are great. Someone will have very happy feet, soon.

Congrats on the sock! And lucky you - I am university admin, but I get the 24th and 31st only. Although I am taking all next week off to go to DC. But, there is NOTHING going on at the university between finals and next quarter - boo! Warm fuzzies for Bella.
Posted by Kim | December 2, 2004 2:49 PM
Aww Bella-Loo. I hope she is getting better. Maybe she ate that collar that she 'lost'.
Oh, and I have added socktacular to my vernacular. That's cool if you don't post pictures of that HUGE knitting project, which is clearly for me.
