UFOs

Thanks for all the face care / TMJ advice. You people know what you're talking about! I did find out that my medical insurance will cover an oral surgeon, but I think I'm going to try a drugstore variety mouthpiece first to see how that goes. Umm, why do so many knitters have TMJ? Do we start grinding our teeth when we're first learning to purl? Hmm....

Today I'd like to take you down a dark, dark alley...the alley of my unfinished objects. I've been kind of bad lately about just posting really cute finished objects and not showing you the parts that don't look so cute. So, in the spirit of full disclosure, here goes.

UFO #1: The Ugliest Baby Sweater There Ever Was

uglybaby.jpg
Aren't baby clothes supposed to be TOO CUTE?

I used yarn that was totally not the right gauge, so I tried to rework the pattern in my gauge. Umm, that didn't work. So I had a hugely wide sweater. To remedy this, I cut through all my garter stitch and then seamed it up to the right size. Problem is, what IS the right size? Is this for a baby? Or a toddler? It was originally for a two year old, but now I have no clue. I'm finishing this thing because it feels like a personal challenge to make it cute and wearable, but I may not give it to anyone. Oh, ugly duckling baby sweater, please become a swan when I am through.

UFO #2: The Puke Colored Top Down Raglan that Jacob Hates

goldtdr.jpg
Is it cool? Or just really chunky and ugly?

I am using Lion Brand Kool Wool for this top down raglan. I like this yarn a lot (it's soft and easy to work with), but it might not be my first choice for a sweater. Since this picture, I've knitted many more inches, including some shaping that I tried, finished the shaping, HATED IT, ripped back, and now I'm pretty much where I was in this picture. So it's going to be straight down, no shaping on this one. Should I cardiganize it? Should I add a color stripe? Every time I try it on, Jacob says EW. This is not a good sign. On another note, I love top down raglans, and I'm thinking that once it's all knitted up with cute long sleeves, it might actually be nice. We shall see.

UFO #3: Five Inches Done When I Realized I Cast On 86 sts Instead of 96 sts

hallowig.jpg
Can you guess what this is going to be?

Yep, it's a Hallowig in progress (see pattern here). Everything was going smoothly until I got the notion to count my stitches across...and I was ten stitches short. Too bad I waited until I already knitted 5 inches of ribbing, because you know what? I ain't ripping out no 5 inches of ribbing. No sir. I will knit on, and hope that my head is abnormally narrow, or that the ribbing looks okay a little stretched out. D'oh.

So there you have it...the ugly truth. My knitting projects are so not cute right now, but hopefully all three of these can be salvaged in the knitting and reworking process. That's the goal, anyhow.

Had a shower for Cathy and her fiance Wes this weekend that was lots of fun. Hopefully I can post pictures soon. There was lots of food eating and beverage drinking....her wedding is getting closer and closer*. I can't believe my twin sister is getting married -- and dude, you should SEE the presents they are getting. Getting engaged rocks...too bad I can't convince Jacob of that. (JUST KIDDING DEAR!!!)

* Speaking of, does anyone know a good song to sing at a wedding? (it has to be religious)? I have a mezzo soprano to alto voice and we're looking for something pretty. Do you like how I ask you for advice ALL THE TIME?? :)

Comments (43)

I had a Catholic wedding and I had the BEST relgious wedding song: "Pie Jesu", you know who has a really nice version? Charlotte Church. You can totally sing it, and it is awesome...I love that song.

carrie, you're funny. :)
too bad you already ripped out the sweater. i liked it and i still insist that in the fashion world that color is referred to as "camel" and not "puke".

Carrie:

For a wedding song, I think a pretty one is "The Wedding Song" by Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary fame. The subtitle is "There is Love." I'm sure it has an arrangement for all voice ranges.

It was sung at my cousin's wedding & it was BEAUTIFUL! It's quite religious, too in a subtle way!

Good luck performing!

Carrie:

Congrats on your sis! Do you live around Atlanta?

Love the blog...isn't that Kool Wool cool? And I do mean tempwise. I'm gonna use it again for a winter project,,as yet undecided. Just wanted to invite you and your many loyal readers to my new very crudely put together page. You can view it at http://journals.aol.com/lindarella1211/ChibisanKnits.

You are SO cute, first of all, for showing your UFOs like you are GUILTY. You crack me up.

Re: wig - I love that you are making that wig. How much fun is that!? Can't wait to see it.

Re: pukey sweater. Well, er. Sweetens, it's more like baby diarrhea than puke. Hmmm. Maybe the Fluffy One is right and stripes could help. Something like red, blue, dk. brown???? If YOU like it, though, that's all that matters.

But did I mention baby poo?

Re: Congrats to your sister!

Thanks a bunch, Carrioke.

gosh, I was laughing at the comment I left you.
I made so many typing and punctuation errors and not to mention when I wrote "sang".
that's what happens while holding a newborn on your lap while trying to type

hey kerrie
for the wedding song,
you should listen to when I see Jesus in your eyes by Julie and Buddy Miller(sounds extremely tacky, but it is an awesome song)
also, there's a great victoria williams song called either let it be so, or what a beautiful day to say forever. both of these songs would fit your range but the julie miller is a duet with a guy. i had the v. williams one in my wedding.
both of them have fantastic wedding lyrics and I guess you could say thatthey are more folky??ans slightly upbeat
anyways- I hate cheesy christian lyrics/songs but I always have loved these.
also, there's a bruce cockburn song-Lord of the starfields that is perfect for a wedding too.

I have sang in a million weddings and those are my favorite

good luck in finding a song-It always seems like before you get married you already have thousands of perfect songs that you've always wanted in your wedding, but when the time comes you have either forgotten them all or they don't really seem to work out.

The colour doesn?t do any good to you, better give it someone for christmas :)

How about "Panis Angelicus"? My sister had this sung at her wedding and it gave me goose bumps :-)

i would also vote for "there is love" - such a pretty song and so appropriate. my suggestion was actually going to be simple gifts (the one someone mentioned regarding alison krauss above), but i like "there is love" better. anything that alison sings is gorgeous in general though. :)

and thanks for the ufo's! now i feel better about all my projects-in-waiting.

I'm with Tina, mouth guards in these parts aren't so pricey... (then again I am up here in Canada.) Get some second opinions! Maybe even try a nearby school of dentistry? My mouth guard is the only thing that keeps me from having to pry my jaws open in the morning.

There is a beautiful song I sang at a few weddings called "Though I May Speak With Bravest Fire". Here's a link, if you're interested:
http://tony.awtrey.com/music/palmdale/gift.html

I'm sure you'll pick something wonderful. :)

Oh I missed your blog!
Your pukey colored sweater IS lovely. It is about the color of the puke I produced when I puked in my office trashcan one day last week. Barf on!

Don't know if you could google this:

THE GIFT OF LOVE Paraphrased by Hal Hopson from
I Corinthians 13

It is a really pretty song. American Folk song apparently. I used to sing it in choir.

Hi Carrie! I've had TMJ since I was a kid (and only started knitting a couple of years ago; maybe teeth grinders are just drawn to it!), and wanted to warn you about drug store mouth guards, if you're referring to the soft ones. I've been told by many a dentist that these may actually *promote* clenching, because they're so chewy. I had a $300 mouth guard made about three years ago, and it was the greatest thing ever! Maybe a different dentist will be able to hook you up with a cheaper custom-made one... Good luck!

I have so many more UFOs than you. You should be proud! And that top down raglan is practically a dead ringer for the first sweater I ever made. Here's a link to it. And I can tell you the questions never stop. Is it cool? Is it horrible? And the husband never really likes it. But I love it now more than ever (just wore it yesterday).

I like the puke down raglan (hee), but agree that it needs a stripe or something. I think red would be a great accent to the brown, and maybe if you added some color to the neckline it would help break it up.

What about something by Amy Grant? "Love Has A Hold on Me" isn't particularly religious, but it might work.

I don't know anything about music and singing but at my wedding a friend sang "When I Fall in Love." Here's a link: http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/store/smp_fastresults.html?cart=330546536310019712

Also, I hope you have a narrow head too.

I happened upon you site from the "Marnie Talks" blog.

One of my favorite Christian love songs is "I Will Be Here" by Steven Curtis Chapman. Somewhat commonly used for weddings, but still beautiful. Words found here: http://www.romantic-lyrics.com/wedding/li153.shtml

I love Ave Maria! I wanted that played at our wedding but my hubby vetoed that due to the fact that it is also played at funerals. I love all your top down raglans! I'm going to start one for myself. I like that it's top down too because I don't know if I have enough yarn!

http://www.oremus.org/hymnal/t/t717.html

I think this is a beautiful song for a wedding. Alison Krause sang a very simple, clean, beautiful, heart-wrenching version on a CD with YoYo Ma.

I love that photo of you in the brown top down raglan - the expression on your face is priceless. And I like how ever-so-casually one can notice a certain someone in the background working on her *(#$#@* poncho. Hey! xoMJ

Well, call me crazy, but I like the raglan. Color and all. As in, you seriously have me thinking about being a big copycat and making a top-down raglan in Kool Wool. Which is pretty remarkable for a supposedly embarassing UFO. I think it would be nice if it was just finished the way it is, but a stripe or some other feature might be nice. The problem with cardiganizing is that cardigans tend to get worn more than sweaters, and if Jacob objects to this sweater, you probably won't be motivated to wear it that often. Though who knows how he'll feel about it when it's all done. And there is the idea someone mentioned of gifting it to someone, which might be good if the Jacob factor is too problematic.

I don't know anything about religious music, but if I were singing in a wedding and I could pick the song I would do We've Only Just Begun. Mmm, cheesy Carpenters goodness. It makes me tear up on a regular basis.

Just popped in. I wanted to comment on the TMJ. Another alternative for treatment to try would be a massage therapist. Some are trained (look for neuromuscular massage) to release the tight muscles of the jaw that lock it into place. Something to think about.
Peace~DAWN

i was here to suggest "there is love" also altho i couldn't think of the name of it until i read the comments. it's been done a million times but there's a reason for it.

Hey Carrie, at the risk of opening a raw wound, how did the relationship with polka dots go. I'm thinking of spending some time with her myself (it being spring here) but would be keen to know if she has any nasty habits I should be aware of. Are all those long distance rows just too, too nauseating? Does she respond to frustrations in a meaningful and loving way? or just ignore and close up?

I'm vote #3 for Ave Maria - just thinking about it brings a tear. My cousin had Morning has Broken which sounds twee but really wasn't, it was beautifully done - it's a bit religious - but maybe not enough?

Ave Maria has been played or sung at a lot of weddings I've attended (including my own) and I never tire of it.

Your projects make me smile. Maybe Jacob doesn't like the color? Your idea of putting in a stripe (or why not work the rest of the garment) in a contrast color is a good one!

Ummmm...I've only been to a hundred weddings in recent history and I'm having troubles coming up with a song for you. :-) I would suggest the song we used for our unity candle, it's called Remember Me and was originally sang by Mark Shultz. We also used A Page is Turned and it was a good song too, that's originally by Bebo Norman. They are both more contemporary Christian songs, so it's up to what you're looking for. The first one is not directly wedding-ish but applies and the second is wedding ish for sure. Let me know if you want the lyrics or something and I'll send 'em.

oh boy...i made a list of my unfinished the other night...i think you've started something! how about we all post pictures of our ufos!?!?!

How about "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" as a wedding choice? It's short and sweet and people love to hear it???? My hubby's a church organist and our choir sang that one a few times...I'm also a mezzo soprano/alto and had no problems with it in the key he played it.

Please, please, please, tell us how many skeins of that yarn you used to make the oh so pretty and much talked about purple poncho. :D
Thanks!

I just went to a Catholic wedding on Saturday, and they had "Ave Maria" - I love that song. It gives me goose bumps! They also had "There is Love" and it stayed in my head *all weekend* I swear. Those are my two suggestions... Why does it have to be religious?

Oh, and I don't think the baby sweater looks bad. But I know what you mean about the albatross factor of some knitting projects. You never really want to work on them so they feel like they'll never end! Sheesh!

I love that you did this. Maybe if I took pictures of all my abandoned projects (ahem) works in progress, I would actually finish them! hmmm. Something to think about anyway. :)

At least your sweater from hell is a baby sweater- you can at least finish it within the decade. My unfinished sweater has been sitting in a drawer for a year. I am scared of it!
Evil sweater!

I love the color of that sweater. Here's what you do: Make it, tell J that you'll only wear it when he's not around, when you're partying with the girls. Pretty soon he'll be jealous of you looking so happy in it and will want you to be happy in it while HE'S around.

Or maybe that's silly. But I LIKE the color! :)

At least you have pictures of your UFO's. My single, solitary UFO has recently been ripped and is now sadly sitting in balls of yarn in my knitting bag. Seems that I changed my gauge in the middle of BM's UCan2 Shell and ended up with a tank top that would fit my husband. Whoops! Oh, and then there's the ever present stripey blanket from "The Yarn Girls Guide to Simple Knits" that is waiting for me to crochet the edging, but FIRST I have to finish weaving in the ends, and Oh. My. God. the ends are killing me.

I think the top down raglan is cute, even in the puke color! The next time Jacob ews at it, tell him that it's really a present for him, and you were trying to keep it a secret and then burst into tears. ;)

I think the "puke" raglan is a cute shape, but a terrible color on you. Finish it and give it to a good friend who has the right skin tone to carry it off. I totally understand that it is impossible to leave it undone, no matter how much you hate it! ;)

honestly i think the puke colored raglan is actually quite cute. and i think you should leave it with the cap sleeves like that.

Hi.
$800 for a mouthguard seems like a lot. I got one 3 years ago in the Seattle area for $365. Try calling a few dentist and asking for a price quote, it shouldn't be $800. Mine hasn't helped but you never know, it could help you.

Take Care!

You gave me quite the chuckle, especially when I read about the Hallowig ("hope that my head is abnormally narrow..").
In my brief history of knitting, there have been MOMENTS when my mind has reeled like that..."Oh it'll just be a 3/4 sleeve cardigan......." or the feeling of "I want to finish, just to be finished with this crappy project!"

you should make Jacob a hallowig out of the "puke" colored yarn. then he might dig it. tell him it's a hallowig the color of "spleen."

Hey! I suggest you RIPRIPRIP that hallowig and start again. I just finished mine last night and even with 96 stitches, it takes a little bit of tugging and pulling to get it to look like a wig around my face, like hair... so as I suggested, rip it out, do it again, or it will look super funny and you'll just be mad, honest.
