long weekend
So, the University was closed on Friday due to bad weather, which meant no work for me. and Jacob had the day off too! I cannot express how happy I was when I groggily checked my email at 6:30 am on Friday morning and it actually had a message saying we were closed. Yahoo! (The totally fun thing is that the day turned out to be quite beautiful. I kinda felt like I was getting away with something, but school was out, bay-bee! )
My twin sister Cathy was really excited because she was out too (she is a high school teacher.) I was laughing with her on Friday about how I can totally remember watching the news when we were little and hoping hoping hoping that school would be closed, but you never think of your TEACHERS as hoping for school to be closed. And now Cat is one of those teachers. WEIRD. She's like, old, or something.
ooh! I finished something this weekend! May I present to you my very own Pearly Purple Poncho:

I heart my new poncho.
Okay, so here's a closeup of what the yarn looks like, and here's a view when I wear it the other way. Jacob prefers it with the yarn overs on the sides instead of down the center. And here's the poncho and me playing the piano:

It's an old fashioned piano poncho.
I used the fabulous pattern found on the Yarn Harlot's site, and I will continue to use this pattern over and over again because the results are super cute, and it is a great pattern. I don't get bored because I have my yarn over rows, but I can still watch Six Feet Under while knitting it. I know ponchos are uber-trendy right now, but who cares? I love the way they look, they keep my shoulders warm, and they're fun to make. (You can see full details about yarn used for the poncho, etc, in my gallery.)
I'm almost finished with my tiny tank using delicious Phildar Copacabana, I just have to seam the sides and make the straps. I finally did the increases and decreases correctly! And in other French pattern news, I succeeded in translating a pattern out of the Phildar Evasion catalog. True, the pattern is just two big squares knit together, but I translated it. I'm working towards translating this sweater, but it's taking a little more time.
Ooh - I went to a new yarn shop this weekend with Jenna and MJ and now I will be saving up my money for two things. I got on the waiting list for a spinning class (!) and I must buy some Manos del Uruguay hand dyed yarn. Oh. It's so beautiful. The colors knocked me over - I seriously wanted to buy some, but I'm using all my self control because I have to have, umm, money to buy yarn. But I will have a skein of that one day. Oh yes. It will be mine.
Okay. I need to go to bed now or finish my Copa tank, whichever happens first.
Mwah.

That is one awesome poncho. Simple but pretty. Great length and a fab color. I don't like the big long ones...but I love this one!!! :-)

For the face thing, I recommend either Proactive or Serious Skin Care, the acne line. SSC is on HSN or I think also through their Web site.
I have used both and they are great. Now I only keep one around for PMS week.

LOoOvE the pOnCho!! How many skeins does it take?
I love the way the yarn looks on that closeup. Yum!

Ditto on the poncho! Great job, great color, cute hair! I told my mom to go and look at the poncho and she was throughly confused...does she have long hair, or short hair?! "Mom, that's her sister, her twin sister", I told her;-) hehe! So how many skeins did you end up needing of the Cascade Pearls? I have been itching to do something with that yarn since I saw it in Kansas City last year!

WOW!!!
You are the cutest, spunkiest thing EVER in that poncho. I want one, too!

LOVE your poncho, I am going to that site right now to get the pattern!

Hi there,
I've been lurking for a bit. The poncho looks great. I used to live in Athens. I was a graduate student at UGA so I know how rarely they cancel school! Glad you got to enjoy it. I can't believe how much things have changed there (I moved away 3(!) years ago). I hardly recognize any of the names you mention. I wonder, where is there an LYS?

can you tell me what yarn you used for this poncho? it's gorgeous! also, i'd like to knit this pattern for my pregnant sister--do you think it's stretchy enough to fit a petite pregnant woman, or should i make it wider?
thanks!

Very pretty! I like it with the eyelets down the middle I think - but it's cool you can wear it both ways!

Your poncho is absolutely gorgeous and I just love the yarn you used. I've been eyeing Yarn Harlot's pattern but wanted a softer, more variegated yarn texture for my own creation. Would you kindly share what kind of yarn you used? Please please please?

I love your poncho! it wouldn't be the same without the piano though. : )

Oooooh Miss Carrie, that is one beautiful poncho. I think I might have to agree with Jacob about wearing the eyelets on the side...Amazing as always!

Darling on you. I just finished one of those myself, and my sister loved it. I love the color!
Posted by Rachael | September 20, 2004 9:03 PM
The poncho really is cute. It's shorter than I thought yarnharlot's was. However, the overall pattern looks the same. Hmmm, is your yarn a different thickness or something? I haven't looked too closely, though, so I'm not really sure.
Re: school being out, I second that emotion. I teach high school and other than adult/homeowner type worries that my house might blow away, I was STOKED that we missed two days of school (Thursday and Friday for us!). Beautiful weekend, too.

I just finished my Very Harlot Poncho also - but I made it with a ruffled edge... they are super groovy. Of course - I made mine for my cousin who lives in LA, so it is black - not the fabulous purple that you have!

I {heart} YOUR PONCHO! It looks fabulous BOTH ways, but I especially love the sideways look (go figure ;) ) I think I hear the call of the poncho beckoning *yet again*, but I will restrain myself! LOL! Anyway, I LVEO IT! It looks GREAT!
Posted by Lara | September 20, 2004 2:58 PM
You should totally *heart* that poncho. It is one of the nicest I have seen.

Great poncho! I love that pattern too. I made one my self, I like it with the holes going down the arms too. I wear it that way myself. It's funny I see poncho's everywhere in the stores, but I don't see anyone wearing them!

Very cute poncho! If you have some problems translating the patterns, i do translating from english to french, so I should know the vocabulary ;-)

When you have a kid it's also delish to call in and say you are working from home, because SCHOOL is closed! hehe...it's sinfully good to stay home...Truant!
I bought some manos for my secret pal a while ago...and I shed tears when I had to give it up...it IS so lush!

That poncho is so cute! You did not tell me you were making it. It's not fair b/c it's purple and now I want it. Puh-lease make me one? Or a boob-holder? Puh-lease?
I was NOT happy that school was out. I was saddened by the loss of learning that occurred. (Tee-hee).

the word cute gets overused, but it's just the appropriate term for you with the new poncho. very very cute.
