Breakout*

*In the realm of too much information, I forgot to get my new pack of birth control pills this week, and I waited too long, and now I have to wait until the end of the month to start up again. Since I did this, my face has broken out like a seventh grader's. (And I can say that because I had BAD skin in seventh grade.) Has anyone ever experienced this before? And what do you use to make your skin look pretty?

Ahem. Now back to your regularly scheduled knitting blog.

Thanks for all the poncho comments. I love it so much. (by the way, for all those who asked, the yarn used is Cascade Pearls, doubled. If you want color, etc, go look at my gallery page.) And it's actually getting some use this week since the mornings have been in the 50s....eww. I know that fall is coming but I haven't had time to replenish my non-sandal shoe wardrobe. Payday is soon....

And, since I can't wait any longer, here's a past finished object that I never showed ya... the Top Secret Knitting Project! (isn't Cathy cute in it? too bad it wasn't for her....)

Cathy tried to steal this top. So did Jenna. And Me.

I made this Chickami as a belated birthday present for my dear friend Valerita, who is in grad school in California and is one of the smartest people I know, and deserves to have a shiny and stretchy chickami for work and school. I did seed stitch on the borders instead of ribbing, and I added a butterfly lace pattern around the bottom and at the top front. I'm really proud of the way it turned out, and Valerie loved it too, I think. She's going to send me some pics of her wearing it. *Edited to add:* in an act of perfect timing, Valerie sent me the pictures this afternoon! Now, how freakin' gorgeous does she look in her tank top?

chikamismile2.jpg
Val looks smashing, if I do say so myself.

Yay. And just because I can, here's a picture of two of my very favorite people in the world: Valerie and Taylor. I miss you guys, damnit.

I'm working on a top-down raglan for me, hopefully with long bell sleeves and some other funky stuff. I feel really comfortable with the top down raglan pattern now, and I'm ready to try some crazy stuff with it. We'll see if that actually happens.

My Copa tank is complete, except for straps and weaving in ends. Copacabana yarn does stretch A LOT. I will tell you more about that when I actually have a picture of the tank looking cute.

Went to the dentist today, and I do have TMJ. My dental insurance won't cover the (gulp) $800 for a mouthguard, so I'm trying to figure some things out. Like, do I want a mouthguard, or more yarn? JUST KIDDING. Actually I'm going to see if I can get my medical insurance to cover it. We shall see.

Umm. What else. Oh! We've been painting Anne Marie's old kitchen cabinets to install in the den for yarn storage. I am a bad painter, but I can do the base coats and then Jacob makes the top coats look pretty. We also sanded, primed and are painting the cutest coffee table that Jacob found by someone's trash. We're going to try that crackle style paint -- I'll take pictures when it's all done. We are going to make our house cute one of these days. After we do the dishes and laundry. Ew.

*If you are my twin sister or me, when you see the word "breakout", you have flashbacks to fourth grade -- we went to a birthday slumber party in fourth grade where we all got in a big fight (!) and the birthday girl went up to her parents' room, got out her father's shotgun, and threatened to shoot herself because no one liked her -- no shit. In FOURTH GRADE. The gun wasn't loaded, but it was traumatic nonetheless. Cathy tripped and fell on a sleeping bag when B-Day girl came downstairs and I was sure that she had been shot. Anyways, we spent a good deal of time before the gun incident listening to the song "Breakout" by Swing Out Sister (80s classic) so that song, and that word, reminds of that crazy party. My family referred to that girl as "The Gunslinger" for the rest of grade school and high school.......

hey! i don't remember that...who was gunslinger? also agree on the mouthguard, don't get the full one, i have the little one that goes at just the front of your teeth.it's alot cheaper. you need to come see me and cat's dentist. she's super awesome! no shower pics?!

I just stopped bcp, on purpose though, and have the first pimples in years! Ahh! One went away and then had the audacity to come back. Let me know if any of these suggestions work.

My memory of a fourth grade slumber party was when we were playing "light as a feather, stiff as a board" and I freaked out because it was working and my friends dropped me from a couple of feet above the ground. And now I can't get "Breakout" out of my head.... great entry!!!!

Hi Carrie - I've been reading your blog for a while, and really enjoy it!

I just wanted to add my $.02...buy the drugstore mouthguard to start (in case insurance won't cover any/all of it and you want some immediate relief), the chikami is awesome(!), and try Boo Boo Zap by Benefit. I really love that stuff, and it helps me with my breakouts when it gets to be that time of month. Additionally, I wash my pillowcases a couple of times a week because I'm a stomach sleeper and my face is planted in the pillowcase all night long!

The only thing I would caution you about is if you get some kind of topical medicine from a dermatologist, be very, very careful about sun exposure.

Take care!

After 6 mths on the BC patch, I decided to switch back to pills. My gym suggested a 2 month estrogen detox. The second day on my new pills -- zits galore. I'm 38 for crying out loud!

Val has the best Chickami in the world.

The gunslinger story? Holy crap! I'm going to have nightmares about that. No, really.

BRAVA on the tank! It's lovely! I dig the butterfly lace. Adds a very nice touch. you have a lucky recipient!

On the mouth issue... I have horrible night-grinding issues and I was waking up with awful headaches. My dentist suggested that a mouthguard wouldn't solve as well as an NTI. It's a little piece of plastic molded to fit over your front teeth. Sort of like you bit into a marble, and it stuck. Then your jaw physically can't clench the same way.... it's certainly not attractive, but I will say that if I forget it, I feel the difference the next day. He managed to get insurance to cover it too, arguing that they could pay for that one time or pay for many moons of pain reliever for my headaches. They seemed to understand that.

Here's the link for one of the NTI thingies: http://www.laser-dds.com/migraine.htm

Great mods on that ChicKami! Me likey very much! TMJ...yikes. Your insurance will definitely cover it, right? (I'm sort of clueless about insurance, mine included.) And I hate breakouts. Ugh. I'm 24, and I thought I would be over and done with the breakouts by now! My birth control doesn't seem to do anything for my skin (for better or worse), but I use PersaGel for big spots and cleanse with something with a bit of salicylic acid in it. I think it works decently.

Am I the only one seriously FREAKED OUT and upset by the slumber party story?? Er, anyway...

The ChicKami looks fantastic! I love the butterfly eyelets--just the right amount of pizzazz.

As for the first part of your post, yes, this happened to me once, and it happened again when I quit smoking. Drink lots of water. Really. Also, I am in love with the Body Shop's seaweed face products, from the regular cleanser to the scrubby one, to the toner, to the face cream, which has the added bonus of not having any oil in it. I have noticed a major improvement in my skin. They've also got a really nice ionic clay mask that I adore. I know the shit can get expensive but I just love it. That is, until they decide to stop making it, which is what happens to all the lines I like. Eh.

that chickami is fabulous! love those stylish details. and i would like to know what percentage of knitters have tmj, lol? i use the drug store ones too. i know people who have purchased the expensive one and then lost it and had to use the drug store one and didn't really see the need to replace it. so i decided to use the "budgetgaurd" too.

bcps are so strange sometimes..I was on OTC lo for like 8 months which wrecked my skin, and now on desogen I'm much happier =)

isn't chickami such a quick, easy knit? it looks fabulous!

great tank, carrie!

i am also making a tiny tank out of copacabana and i love working with it, except that it sheds all over black pants when you are on an airplane. :)

Carrie,

I read your blog all the time. I started knitting in April, and I'm addicted.

You don't know me, but I think your blog is cool! I just started one too, and I assume you'll get the link somehow in the comment! Rock on!

Jen

Is it me, or are my boobs different sizes in that picture? Must be the flash...
I feel like the luckiest girl in the world! You have no idea how awesome someone is at knitting until you wear something they have made. Knitters who give away presents like this must have some Mother Teresa gene because that is a purely selfless act of kindness. Mwaaaaa!

Carrie you have the funniest stories. GREAT tank for your friend Val; you did a super job on all the little extras to personalize it, and that yarn was a great choice. I'm so impressed.

P.S. I have a job in Athens! Will write with details!

This is the night guard that I've used for years: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=75983&catid=1152&trx=PLST-0-SRCH&trxp1=1152&trxp2=75983&trxp3=1&trxp4=0&btrx=BUY-PLST-0-SRCH
One will usually last six months to a year depending on how stressed I am (yoga/meditation before bed really helps loosen my jaw). The best part, the plastic buffer prevents my teeth from making that awful grinding noise so the Mr. can sleep without dreams of his own teeth crumbling and falling out.

Oh yeah, BTW, I'm also kind of shocked that Breakout was the big song when you were in the 4th grade. I thought from reading your blog that we were close in age, but jeez Louise, I was in my freshman year of college when that song was big! I feel so old.

very excellent chickami! I think the details are so pretty...very feminine.

insurance companies suck. boo!

I can tell you that when I get the monthly breakouts..(always on my damn chin)

I use these products...

first:
http://www.origins.com/templates/products/sp_nonshaded.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY5812&PRODUCT_ID=PROD4481

Then this guy to zap em dead. It's Raid for Zits.

http://www.origins.com/templates/products/sp_nonshaded.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY5790&PRODUCT_ID=PROD43

Hope this helps.

I also have TMJ and shelled out $500 because my insurance would not cover the mouthgard. I wouldn't recommend getting one of those- they don't really seem to help much and make my gums swell up overnight (lack of circulation??) It is weird.

I use this awesome gel stuff for my face that I got from my dermatologist. If you do end up seeing a doctor and want to know what it is called, I can tell you- I can never remember the name of it! I have had pimples my whole life including now but this gel stuff rocks. I have had better skin with it that I ever have! yaay!

Love the tank and especially the eyelets! :)

The Chickami is wonderful -- the details you added really "Make" it!

And it sounds like you had far more interesting slumber parties than I did.

Who wouldn't be happy with such a fabulous ChicKami??? Clever you to use that stretchy yarn; it adds to the fitted look. And the piece de resistance: the butterfly lace at the top. Very, very clever. Bravisima, Carrie!

P.S. The Gunslinger...you slay me!

You made me think of an incident when I was in seventh grade, and we started playing a game where we were supposed to ANONYMOUSLY write down who we liked and didn't like. One girl [CAMILLE T: you were a bitch and a half to me all through middle school and to this day I hate you with a sharp passion] took the opportunity to totally cut into me. Big argument broke out! I threatened to call my parents and have them pick me up. Haha!

oh, and great job on the chickami!

That slumber party story is FUNNY AS SHIT! I'm reading along, amused, thinking "cute, 4th grade slumber party" and THEN you bust out with a story about a shotgun wielding psycho-kid! hee!

As for the breakout/pill sitch... I don't get breakouts really when I f-up my pills (which is ALL the time) but when I forget to get the new pack and it's like already THURSDAY after the SUNDAY and I've missed 4 pills, I 'pretend' I took Sundays, then treat it like I missed three, and take two that night and two the next. If it's like friday or Sat, I just wait till THAT sunday and start. HELL IF I'm going to do what the pack says and finish out the week, scrap the pack and start a new one on sunday. TOTAL WASTE! (dang, this is a long comment)

Awesome tank you made for Valerie! I like the creative changes you made to the Chickami. Kudos!
And please tell Anne Marie Hi for me. It's been awfully quiet on her blog, but I hope she's well. =)

You know, you HAD to tell everyone that story. Now I'm going to have that song in my head for the rest of the night.I probably won't be able to sleep.

The tank looks SOOO cute on Valerie! Are you making mine now?

P.S. Where are you? I've been calling you all night....:)

Oh, swing out sister! What a trip back in time. most slumber parties ended with fights and hard feelings, but precious few end in near-bloodshed! that story's fantastic.

I love the fourth grade story -my god you must have had nightmares for years! I bet you were wary of fighting with your friends after that! :-)

And that tank looks brilliant. Definitely makes me wish I could knit!

Try St Ives Blemish Control Face scrub for your spots. It will make your skin look much better within seven days - I promise!

I'm glad you brought up the TMJ issue because I desperately need a mouthguard and after reading everybody's comments on the issue, I'm going to run out and try one of those guards from the drugstore. AND your bc/acne concern was a "lightbulb" moment for me. HELLO! That's probably why I've been breaking out like no tomorrow. I'm making an appointment NOW!

Hi Carrie - definitely go the cheap mouthguard. I have for years and now have dozens of the things so there is always one handy. This works as a two in one - there's nothing remotely sexy about me with my mouthguard (especially when it's a colured one!)so it doubles as birth control (he he).
I love the Freeman's fruit acid stuff when I get the skin blah's - I think it is American so you probably get it there?

Wow...I always thought Chickami was cute but boring, but you really dressed it up with those eyelets and I totally love it. Now you'll have to make one for yourself...

I just went through that pill situation recently. To be totally honest, I started any random Sunday and had no problems - used other protection for that month to be sure (I think I really only needed it for the first two weeks, but better safe than sorry in that case) - but no spotting or other weirdness they warn you of.

Now for skin. I really looked forward to a few years between acne and grey hairs. It didn't happen. Ugh. I recommend Cetaphil cleanser (not the oily skin kind, just regular) and Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask. Both pretty cheap at the drugstore. I've also been having amazingly clear skin from tea tree oil (I use it all over face once a day. Got it at the grocery store.)

Good luck!

Here's another vote for the cheapo mouthguard, I used those for many years myself. I also had some physical therapy for TMJ and was given some exercises that really helped- e-mail if you want more info on that. Yet another things that's helpful- all that new age mind-body stuff, relaxation etc etc. My jaw used to pop and crack and sometimes freeze-up in the mornings, that's all gone now and I don't need the icky mouthguard at night even. Good luck with it and btw, beautiful knitting!

I had the whole TMJ/insurance issue a while back, and yeah, the occlusal splint was stupidly expensive. With the amount of people that need it to fix headaches and migraines, for crying out loud, you'd think that the insurance companies would get a clue. Pain relief is NOT cosmetic. Although you do smile more because you're not in pain all the time. I love your site, it was the first knitting blog I'd ever seen! You're so charismatic, and real, and cool. Oh, and sports mouthguards, the ones you put in hot water to soften up, then they mold to your mouth, those work decently well too. Try one before you blow $800. It will at least grant you temporary relief until you do get it.

I too have tmj. Don't buy the mouthgaurd, just get a sports one and use that. I bought the mouthgaurd only to have my dog eat it 3 months later. I was so pissed at him why he would want something that was in my mouth all night (hello... morning breath!!) I don't know but he ate it... all.

about the birth control/breakout issue: I HATE THAT! It happens to me alllll the time. My savior: Pure Simplicity face care. It's the shit. I use the rice face wash/lotion, neem face mask, and tomato face scrub... I absolutely could not live without the neem. Anyway, it's from Bath and Body Works and it's great. :)

I had to laugh at your fourth grade story -- the way you wrote it cracked me up!! Gunslinger certainly had a flair for the dramatic, huh?

Great job on the top -- you are quite the inspiration! I'm a beginner knitter....and your site keeps me inspired!

i have TMJ too. seriously i think i was your triplet separated at birth. the cheapo cheapo mouthguards they sell at the drug store actually work pretty well for that - don't think it's actually necessary to get the molded to your teeth one. (or to have the dentist order it, bill your insurance for it, and then somehow "lose it" when it was delivered to his office.)

the new tank looks great great great. you are becoming such the innovator with your knittin girlfriend. very impressive. :)

p.s. god i would love it if 'gunslinger' was my nickname.
